Facebook parent Meta partners with AMD for mobile infrastructure program
By: Kitco News | May 11, 2022
Facebook parent, Meta Platforms Inc (FB.O), and chip maker AMD (AMD.O) on Wednesday said they were partnering for a mobile internet infrastructure program that would bring base station costs down to make broadband more accessible around the world.
The program, called Evenstar, was launched by Meta in early 2020 and promotes a platform called OpenRan that makes it possible for cellular network operators to mix and match hardware and software for building base stations instead of buying all of it from one equipment maker.
That gives operators more flexibility and makes equipment pricing more competitive, said Gilles Garcia, an executive with AMD's data center and communications group.
"They have a very aggressive target for the cost, because Meta is also trying to cover the uncovered regions and the underdeveloped countries. So they want to make sure there are more and more people connected," said Garcia.
AMD said its radio chip, Xilinx Zynq UltraScale RFSoC, will be used in the Evenstar radio units.

AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) Shines Green In A Sea Of Red
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | May 6, 2022
• Wall Street’s Reaction
Despite their shares being down almost 50% from last year’s all-time high, Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) was a welcome sight for sore eyes this week. Equity markets have been under their longest period of selling pressure since the COVID panic of 2020, and in terms of the performance, we have to go back decades to see a worse start to the year. A deadly cacophony of soaring inflation, slowing growth, and rising interest rates has created a potent risk-off sentiment that has hit growth and tech stocks the most.
Among them, AMD shares have been particularly hard hit. The reason for this is due to the rising rates increasing borrowing expenses and therefore hurting bottom-line profit. But for this week at least, AMD can call itself a winner. The semiconductor company released their Q1 earnings earlier this week and they impressed right from the start. Their EPS came in at $1.13, a healthy $0.20 above what analysts had been expecting. Revenue for the quarter was also solid, ahead of the consensus, and up 71% on the year.
CEO Lisa Su spoke bullishly about the results. She was quick to point to the completion of the Xilinx acquisition and plans to acquire Pensando as evidence of their growth plans coming to fruition, and felt these milestones marked a “significant inflection point” in AMD’s technological transformation. The first-quarter results actually included six weeks worth of revenue from Xilinx, which AMD officially required in the middle of February, and Su said that “the addition cannot be overstated as it significantly expands our product and technology portfolio.”
WALL STREET’S REACTION
So while all of this was obviously quite positive, there were some on Wall Street who took a negative view to the results. The team at Benchmark actually lowered their price target to $125 a share from the $145 it had been previously as they felt this was a lower earnings multiple and more in line with where the company was going. However, at the same time they still highlighted AMD’s “across-the-board strength in demand and solid internal execution”.
At Mizuho Securities, analyst Vijay Rakesh, who has a buy rating on AMD's stock, also lowered his price target to $145 a share from $160. Rakesh noted that the company saw strength in its data center business, and that its supply levels were better-than-expected, given the industry's constraints. SMBC Nikko Securities America analyst Srini Pajjuri did the same thing, and lowered his price target on AMD to $100 a share from $125. But, even so, Paijuri said that the company is benefiting from increased market share in servers, strong console demand and improved supply. "We continue to be impressed by AMD's execution and expect the company to benefit from healthy data center demand and further gains in Server," Paijuri wrote in a note to clients.
Considering that AMD shares are only just about trading at $94, even the reduced price targets still suggests there’s a nice bit of upside to be had. And the thing is there wasn't even all negative. The team at Bank of America actually raised their price target up to $160 and said that AMD is “better positioned than ever due to the company scale manufacturing relationships and portfolio breadth which should allow it to gain wallet share in the secularly growing server market.”
GETTING INVOLVED
For investors considering getting involved there's a nice support line at the $85 level to base an entry and exit around. To the upside we're looking at a multi month long downtrend that needs to be broken before the bulls can start popping bottles of champagne. Investors should look for shares to cross back above the $100 level in the coming weeks and assuming market conditions don't take them back down it's fair to aim for the $120-130 range in the medium term.
AMD is still a best-in-class semiconductor company and while it's had a tough couple of months this week's report shows that the engine is running nicely. Everything is in place for the recovery to get going once market conditions allow.

AMD Earnings Trade: Here's What to Do Now
By: TheStreet | May 4, 2022
• Advanced Micro Devices stock jumped higher on earnings but is losing steam in the session. Here's how to trade AMD stock from here.
Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are fading from Wednesday's high, but are still up about 3% after the company reported earnings on Tuesday evening.
The other day, TheStreet asked if AMD and Nvidia (NVDA) can deliver and that’s exactly what AMD did last night — it delivered. Nvidia won’t report earnings until late May, but AMD’s report bodes well for the company.
Put simply, AMD crushed it.
The company beat on earnings and revenue expectations and provided a better-than-expected outlook. Management’s outlook and discussion of its business painted a rather bullish picture.
CEO Lisa Su was quite optimistic following the company’s acquisition of Xilinx and its pending acquisition of Pensando.
We’ve also heard plenty of positive commentary from other semiconductor companies. I don’t know how the market will treat these stocks and AMD going forward — after all, the stock is already fading pretty far on the day — but it’s hard to argue that AMD’s business has momentum.
Will that eventually translate to momentum in the stock price?
Trading AMD Stock
Weekly chart of AMD stock.
Chart courtesy of TrendSpider.com
The $100 area was a major breakout zone in 2021 and acted as strong support in the first quarter of 2022. Without much surprise though, this support zone failed in April as tech and growth stocks came under strong selling pressure.
On the plus side, AMD stock held the 61.8% retracement amid the recent decline, finding its footing near $85.
Unfortunately, its rally back toward $100 and the declining 10-week moving average was met by sellers. The stock topped out at $98.28 this morning, up 7.8%.
From here, it’s not an easy one to navigate. Those who want to be long after a solid report have every right to be. However, they need to keep an eye on the $85 level, particularly if the selling pressure in the Nasdaq persists.
A break of last month’s low at $84.02 that isn’t quickly reclaimed could open the door down to the $74 to $75 zone. That will be the next key zone, as it was former support throughout the second half of 2020 and in 2021.
On the upside, $98 is now a key area. Above that puts the all-important $100 area in play and the declining 10-week moving average.
If AMD can push through that area — likely in combination with a market-wide rally — it opens the door to the $112 to $115 area. There AMD stock finds the 50-week and 21-week moving averages.

AMD Stock Surges On Solid Q1 Earnings Beat, Bullish Chip Sales Outlook
By: TheStreet | May 4, 2022
• "Our focus remains on the premium, gaming and commercial portions of the market where we see strong growth opportunities, and we expect to continue gaining overall client revenue share," said CEO Lisa Su.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares leapt higher in pre-market trading after the chipmaker blasted first quarter earnings forecasts, and boosted its full-year revenue outlook, as cloud demand more than offset a slump on PC-related sales.
AMD posted earnings of $1.13 per share for the three months ending in March, topping Street forecasts by 22 cents, on adjusted revenues of $5.89 billion. Gross margins rose 700 basis points from last year to 53%, topping analysts' estimates of a 52.4% print.
Looking ahead, AMD said 2022 revenues should come in north of $26 billion, with a second quarter tally in the region of $6.5 billion, thanks to what CEO Lisa Su called the "premium, gaming and commercial portions of the (global semiconductor) market where we see strong growth opportunities and expect to continue gaining overall client revenue share."
There is some softness in the PC market. But we had, for the last number of quarters, actually been shifting our mix to the higher end or the more premium segments of the PC market, and so that's where more of our exposure is," Su told investors on a conference call late Tuesday. "And with the addition of Xilinx, we also have another set of end markets that have very strong demand that are all additive to our business."
AMD shares were marked 6.8% higher in pre-market trading to indicate an opening bell price of $97.30 each, a move that would still leave the stock with a year-to-date decline of around 32%.
Earlier this year, AMD pushed deeper into the lucrative data center market with the $1.9 billion purchase of enterprise services start-up group Pensando. AMD is also getting a boost from its $35 billion takeover of Xilinx (XLNX) - Get Xilinx, Inc. Report.
"The strategic importance of the Xilinx acquisition to our long-term goals cannot be overstated," Su said. "As the industry's No. 1 provider of FPGA and adaptive computing solutions, Xilinx significantly expands our technology and product portfolio."
Xilinx's data-center chips have become much more valuable in the wake of the global pandemic, triggered in part by a surge in work-from-home dynamics that have pressured companies around the world to improve their technology and storage capabilities.
"Despite PC weakness, where AMD's assumptions continue to be conservative, and more in line with how we believe the market is shaping out to be, AMD's share gains in servers are helping," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Ambrish Srivastava, who carries a 'market perform' rating with a $100 price target on the stock.
"Assumptions for Xilinx are for 2x growth vs. what we had been modeling for," he added. "Consequently, the acquisition should be slightly accretive this year."

Can Chip Makers AMD and Nvidia Deliver?
By: TheStreet | May 3, 2022
• The two semiconductor companies have the opportunity to dispel doubts about their growth.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA) pass a crucial test in this month of May.
The two chipmakers have experienced hell on the stock market since the beginning of the year.
Worried about global growth, investors have fled tech and semiconductor and microprocessor makers in particular, despite seemingly solid fundamentals.
The reason? A lack of chips to manufacture their products.
This is the case in the automotive sector as well, where manufacturers have had to halt the assembly of certain models for lack of parts. Electronics, IT and other industries have also suffered, as they scramble for the right materials.
This chip crisis is expected to last until at least 2024, industry sources say. However, semiconductor manufacturers did not take advantage of the earlier boom times, thus ending the golden period of 2021.
Sharp Drop in AMD and Nvidia Stocks
AMD shares are down 37.1% since Dec. 31. In the first quarter of 2022, AMD shares fell 24.01%.
As for Nvidia shares, the decline is 33.6% since December and 28.4% for the first quarter completed on March 31.
AMD shares are trading at the time of writing at $90.50, down from $143.90 on Dec. 31.
The current Nvidia stock price is $195.33 versus $294.06 on Dec. 31.
Nvidia, AMD and Intel sell graphics processing units and CPUs to gamers.
They are also prominent producers of semiconductors and systems for application in cloud servers, self-driving cars, the metaverse, artificial intelligence and more.
After months of uncertainty, the two companies will publish their quarterly results this month.
AMD kicks off May 3 at the close. Investors will then wait for May 25 to find out how Nvidia performed in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2022.
Analysts predict that AMD will report a substantial increase in profit and revenue, but at a slower pace than in past years. Analysts estimate EPS of $0.91 vs. $0.52 in Q1 FY 2021. Revenue is also expected to grow.
But investors want to know about AMD's growth plans. The company announced in April the acquisition of Pensando Systems Inc., a provider of networking and security services, for $1.9 billion.
This transaction is expected to give AMD an advantage in the data center sector, a high-growth market.
"The Pensando team brings world-class expertise and a proven track record of innovation at the chip, software and platform level which expands our ability to offer leadership solutions for our cloud, enterprise and edge customers," Lisa Su, AMD chair and chief executive officers, said in a press release.
Pensando’s products are already deployed at scale across cloud and enterprise customers, including Goldman Sachs, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud.
Will a Good Surprise Be Enough?
Investors also want to scrutinize the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom segment, which includes server and embedded processors rather than processors for desktops and laptops.
This division is expected to continue to grow. Any sign of a slowdown is likely to heighten investor fears.
AMD has managed in past quarters to pleasantly surprise investors. It is possible that this time even a good surprise is not enough given the context.
Demand is likely to be hurt by rising concerns about recession and the prospect that consumers will cut spending and reduce purchases, observers say.
That's particularly possible since during the pandemic, consumers and companies bulked up on tech tools, particularly PCs.
These sources suggest that factors portend a downturn in the PC market. In general, many investors are betting on a slowdown in hardware sales in 2022 and 2023.
Nvidia is the chip maker that could be the most affected by these growth fears, because it generates much of its sales from video gaming rigs.
Analysts believe the company could be hit hard once households pare back purchases.
Investors are also linking Nvidia's future to changes in the crypto space, especially in the ethereum blockchain.
Ethereum in June is supposed to be moving to a new version and a new transaction validation mechanism that will change the way the native cryptocurrency of this platform, ether, is minted.
The change is likely to reduce the number of GPUs used to create ether, and GPUs are one of Nvidia's cash cows.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Q1 Preview: Can Shares Return to Former Glory?
By: Zacks Investment Research | May 2, 2022
Stocks tumbled again last Friday to close out a tough week in the market. To put it simply, it was a pretty brutal April month all around. Perhaps, the old saying “April showers bring May flowers” can be valid for the investing world and bring us a prosperous month.
It’s a fresh week. Investors will be pivoting their focus to the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) announcement on Wednesday; the consensus is that the Fed will be raising rates by 50 basis points. While this rate hike is critical, the real focus will be on what the Fed plans moving forward in the summer meetings.
In the meantime, earnings season rolls on. We’ve witnessed adverse market reactions to quarterly releases, which is usually not the case. Economic concerns and geopolitical issues have undoubtedly weighed heavily on investor sentiment.
On deck to report quarterly results tomorrow after the market closes is the big semiconductor player Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The chart below illustrates the year-to-date performance of AMD and two other chip names – Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) and ON Semiconductor Group (ON) – while comparing the S&P 500 as well.
As we can see, it’s been a tough stretch in the semiconductor space. AMD has had the worst 2022 performance, followed closely by NVDA. In fact, none of the companies have managed to even come close to the S&P 500's performance. The semiconductor shortage has added fuel to this fire sale.
Stretching out the time frame over the past year, we can see that nearly all three companies’ shares took a downwards trajectory around December 2021. Though 2022 hasn’t been kind, all three companies have managed to outpace the S&P 500 thanks to their nearly year-long run in 2022.
Previous Share Reactions
AMD has exceeded EPS estimates over its last six quarterly reports. However, the share price has only moved upwards twice over this timeframe; shares rose 7.5% following its latest earnings release and 6.6% in its July 2021 earnings release. The company’s four-quarter trailing average EPS surprise sits at a respectable 17%.
When share price rallied following the quarterly reports, AMD exceeded EPS expectations by at least 20% in both instances. To me, it seems an extensive EPS beat may be needed to fuel another rally for shares. Additionally, with the weakness in the semiconductor space throughout 2022, investors will most likely react adversely to any EPS or revenue miss.
Q4 2021 Earnings
AMD reported quarterly record revenue of $4.8 billion in its latest earnings report, up 49% year-over-year and 12% quarter-over-quarter. It also had robust quarterly profitability; gross margin was 50%, and operating income tallied $1.2 billion.
In its computing and graphics segment, revenue was up 32% year-over-year, driven by its RyzenTM and RadeonTM processor sales. Within the company’s enterprise, embedded, and semi-custom segment, revenue tallied $2.2 billion, boosted by higher EPYCTM and semi-custom processor sales.
AMD witnessed strong demand for premium desktop and notebook PCs built with their impressive Ryzen 5000 processors and announced new Ryzen processors with AMD 3D V-Cache technology to power an unparalleled gaming experience. Additionally, AMD had a higher average selling price for its products throughout the quarter, driven by a richer mix of Ryzen processor and Radeon product sales.
Moving forward, AMD expects robust demand across both segments due to its cutting-edge technology and its established stance in the booming gaming industry. Furthermore, the company is benefitting majorly from the digital shift we’ve undergone since COVID-19 took the world by storm.
EPS & Revenue Estimates
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Q1 earnings sits at $0.91 per share, reflecting stellar earnings growth in the double-digits at 75% from the year-ago quarter. Additionally, the Consensus Estimate trend has remained unchanged over the last 60 days, though one analyst recently upgraded their quarterly estimate. Notably, zero analysts have downgraded their estimates in this timeframe.
Q1 sales estimates are looking strong as well; the $5 billion consensus revenue estimate represents a sizable top-line expansion of 45% from the year-ago quarter. Additionally, AMD provided uplifting revenue guidance for 2022, held down by robust growth across all businesses.
ON Semiconductor & Nvidia Comparison
ON Semiconductor (ON) is a leading supplier of power and analog semiconductors and sensors. Before the market opened today, ON reported its quarterly results; the company reported EPS of $1.22 and quarterly revenue of $1.9 billion, fueling shares to gain nearly 4% in the pre-market session.
ON Semiconductor Corporation Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
ON Semiconductor Corporation price-consensus-eps-surprise-chart | ON Semiconductor Corporation Quote
Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) is the worldwide leader in visual computing technologies and the inventor of the graphic processing unit (GPU). The Zacks Consensus Estimate Trend for NVDA’s upcoming quarter has retraced marginally over the last 60 days, now displaying quarterly earnings of $1.29 per share.
Nvidia’s quarterly EPS estimate displays a notable 43% year-over-year growth in earnings, and the $8.1 billion consensus revenue estimate easily beats out NVDA’s year-ago quarterly sales of $5.6 billion by close to 45%.
NVIDIA Corporation Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
NVIDIA Corporation price-consensus-eps-surprise-chart | NVIDIA Corporation Quote
These semiconductor companies are still posting and forecasting strong year-over-year growth rates, which bodes well for AMD heading into tomorrow.
Bottom Line
A highly unanticipated level of demand for microchips during the pandemic caused the supply chain to fall completely out of equilibrium. Blending the chip shortage into a volatile market environment with rising borrowing rates and surging energy costs has undoubtedly fueled the poor 2022 share performance.
However, microchips are a staple in our everyday lives, whether we realize it or not. Nearly every piece of technology requires a microchip to function correctly, and this trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as we continuously become more dependent on them.
Quarterly estimates and year-over-year growth rates are looking solid. This, paired with AMD’s strong demand across nearly all products, gives me an optimistic view of the company heading into its quarterly release. It is important that investors are aware of current market sentiment, as a robust earnings does not guarantee anything as we've seen so far in 2022. Still, semiconductor companies will benefit massively in the long-term.
AMD is currently a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) with an overall VGM Score of an A.

Earnings Previews: Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD)
By: 24/7 Wall St. | May 2, 2022
• Here is a look at three companies on deck for earnings reports after markets close Tuesday.
Advanced Micro Devices
At the end of 2021, shares of chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) were up about 30%. The stock plunged by 23% in January and, for the past 12 months, shares are up just 1.8%. The stock closed down 4.6% on Friday, getting a further push downward from Intel’s comments that the global chip shortage is likely to last longer than once expected and rising inflation is keeping customers’ hands on their wallets. AMD’s outlook for the rest of the year probably will have more influence on the share price than first-quarter results.
There are 39 analysts covering AMD, and 22 have rated the stock a Buy or Strong Buy while another 16 have Hold ratings. At a recent price of around $85.50 a share, the upside potential to a median price target of $147.50 is 72.5%. At the high price target of $200, the upside potential is 134%.
Consensus estimates call for first-quarter revenue of $5.58 billion, which would be up 15.6% sequentially and 61.7% higher year over year. Adjusted EPS of $0.92 are flat sequentially and up 43.5% year over year. For the full 2022 fiscal year, analysts’ current consensus estimates call for EPS of $4.03, up 44.6%, on revenue of $25.46 billion, up 54.9%.
AMD stock trades at 21.2 times expected 2022 EPS, 17.6 times estimated 2023 earnings of $4.85 and 14.6 times estimated 2024 earnings of $5.86 per share. The stock’s 52-week range is $72.50 to $164.46. AMD does not pay a dividend, and total shareholder return over the past year is 1.9%.

AMD Q1 Earnings Preview: 40% Stock Slide Shows Macro Risks Pressuring Growth
By: Investing.com | May 2, 2022
• Reports Q1 2022 results on Tuesday, May 3, after the market close
• Revenue Expectation: $5.01 billion
• EPS Expectation: $0.91
When Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) releases its latest quarterly earnings on Tuesday, after the close, the chipmaker may again show robust demand for its products which are used in data centers, cell phones, and gaming consoles. The Santa Clara, California-based AMD reported in February that its first quarter sales will be better than what Wall Street estimated at that time.
Indeed, after the high double-digit sales expansion during the past two years, AMD is reaching a level of profitability nearly identical to arch-rival Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)—something that would have been inconceivable just a few years ago.
AMD Weekly TTM
Still, despite producing stellar quarterly growth figures for a number of quarters in a row, investors have shunned AMD stock this year. Shares, which closed on Friday at $85.52, are down more than 40% this year, making AMD one of the worst-performing chip stocks.
This divergence between growth and the stock performance shows that investors don’t see a rosy future for the industry going forward, given rapidly increasing interest rates and inflationary pressures which are clearly not transient.
The chip sector belongs to those segments of the economy that are considered highly cyclical. Historically, the industry generally ends up managing a high level of inventories whenever the global economy slips into a recession.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, often referred to as the SOX, has shed about 25% gains this year after accelerating at least 40% in each of the past three years. The decline has wiped out more than $750 billion in market value.
Recession Threat
That downturn comes as a number of economists believe it will be tough for the Federal Reserve to avoid a recession if it raises interest rates too aggressively. According to Goldman Sachs, the central bank will face a difficult task in tightening monetary policy enough to cool inflation without causing a US recession, with the odds of a contraction at about 35% over the next two years.
Yet, AMD’s rapidly expanding market share and its track record of exceeding expectations have prompted some analysts to advise clients to take advantage of this weakness. Of 40 analysts polled by Investing.com, 24 have a “buy” rating on the stock, while 15 are "neutral."
AMD Consensus Estimate
Source: Investing.com
Their 12-month consensus price target of $145.51 implies a 70% upside potential.
Raymond James in a note last week upgraded AMD to a strong buy and increased its price target to $160, saying:
“As we have become more concerned about cycle risks given potential for slowing consumer demand and elevated inventory levels at customers, we favor those semi companies with strong secular drivers, more muted cyclical exposure and attractive valuations, for which AMD appears well positioned."
The note also said AMD will continue to provide tough competition for Intel which is struggling to ramp up its production.
“With INTC’s roadmap not showing parity with AMD until at least the end of 2024, we think continued share gains for AMD in datacenter are likely inevitable, and we believe tight supply conditions are encouraging customers to commit to AMD to ensure supply.”
Bottom Line
The pullback in AMD shares could be a buying opportunity for long-term investors as the company continues to report robust earnings, providing a solid reason to remain bullish about its growth prospects going forward.

Stock To Watch In The Coming Week: Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD)
By: Investing.com | May 1, 2022
Investors will be bracing for another volatile week in the stock market this week on signs that ongoing bearish sentiment has more room to run, especially when an adverse macroeconomic environment has begun to hurt corporate America.
Rising interest rates, some high-profile earnings disappointments, and escalating geopolitical risk weighed heavily on stocks in April.
For the NASDAQ Composite, the past month was the worst since 2008, as both Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)—two tech heavyweights—signaled a tough road ahead as supply-chain disruptions and higher costs reduce their profitability.
Shares of Amazon tumbled about 14% on Friday—the stock's biggest drop since 2006—after the e-commerce giant reported a surprise loss and issued weak revenue guidance for the second quarter.
The S&P 500 lost 8.8% in April, its worst month since March 2020, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 4.9% on the month.
Amid this challenging economic backdrop and uncertainty regarding corporate growth, we've short-listed three stocks that could see some accelerated trading action after they report quarterly numbers during the week ahead:
1. Advanced Micro Devices
Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) will report its latest quarterly earnings on Tuesday, May 3, after the market close. Analysts expect the Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker to report $0.91 a share profit on sales of $5.01 billion.
AMD Weekly TTM
After a powerful rally in 2021, AMD shares have been under intense selling pressure this year. The stock is down about 40% year-to-date, at a time when the benchmark Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has weakened by about 27%. Shares closed at $85.52 on Friday.
This sell-off comes despite the chipmaker producing a surprisingly strong sales forecast in February, suggesting it’s making additional gains in computer processors versus archrival Intel (NASDAQ:INTC).
The chipmaker’s first quarter sales outlook showed that AMD is reaching a level of profitability that’s nearly identical to Intel’s—something that would have been inconceivable just a few years ago. First-quarter revenue will be $5 billion, plus or minus $100 million, according to AMD.

AMD Well-Positioned to Continue Taking Market Share, Says Raymond James
By: TipRanks | April 29, 2022
One of the most prominent trends on Wall Street in 2022 has been to lower expectations. The current uncertain macro environment demands caution what with rising inflation, anticipated interest rate hikes and Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
The market has certainly shown it is weary of the developing narrative; the pullbacks have been brutal with many previous high-flyers crashing badly.
So, time to counter all this bearish sentiment and back those which have the wherewithal to withstand the current macro trends. And looking at the case of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Raymond James’ Chris Caso thinks the company fits the bill.
“As we have become more concerned about cycle risks given potential for slowing consumer demand and elevated inventory levels at customers, we favor those semi companies with strong secular drivers, more muted cyclical exposure and attractive valuations, for which AMD appears well positioned,” the 5-star explained.
Much of Caso’s bullish outlook for AMD is based on its better positioning compared to rival Intel (INTC). Given AMD’s move to the N5 TSMC node, when the next-generation EPYC server CPU Genoa hits the market in 4Q22, Caso believes the technology gap between the two companies will “widen further.”
Both chip giants already have clearly defined roadmaps and Caso thinks time is on AMD’s side. This is because Intel’s roadmap is not expected to show “parity” with AMD’s before the end of 2024. As such, Caso believes “continued share gains for AMD in datacenter are likely inevitable.” Furthermore, given the current tight supply conditions, Caso thinks clients are likely to commit to AMD to “ensure supply.”
Over time, Caso also believes the PC market will turn into a “sustained duopoly.” Even if Intel does execute its process roadmap “flawlessly,” – which Caso believes is in no way guaranteed – and by 2024/25 manages to get near to AMD’s transistor performance, the analyst still doesn’t think Intel will be able to “maintain” its presently dominant share of the market in client and server.
With all this as backdrop, Caso rates AMD shares a Strong Buy along with a $160 price target. This figure makes room for 12-month share gains of an 87%. (To watch Caso’s track record, click here)
What does the rest of the Street think lies in store for the chipmaker? Based on 13 Buy vs. 8 Holds, the analysts’ view is that AMD stock is a Moderate Buy. The forecast calls for one-year returns of 68%, considering the average price target clocks in at $143.94.

BofA Bullish on AMD, Bearish on Intel Ahead of Earnings
By: Investing.com | April 26, 2022
Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya has reiterated a Buy rating on AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) ahead of the company’s earnings report in early May.
The analyst is calling for Q1 sales of $5.5 billion with a Q2 guide of $6.4 billion, fueled by the integration of Xilinx (NASDAQ:XLNX). Arya also expects AMD to reiterate 31% YoY organic growth with total sales of $25 billion (up 50%+ YoY) including Xilinx which is above the $24bn current consensus.
“While AMD also faces a ~3% (or $800mn) topline headwind/9c (or 2%) EPS headwind on PC softness, we think it could be offset by stronger laptop pricing (enterprise mix-shift), game console channel rebuild, server strength, and Xilinx upside (pricing, Altera share gains) driving total to unchanged $25bn in sales/>$4 in EPS. Note, bulk of PC downside is in low-end Chromebooks where AMD did not participate, nor was it exposed to Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) internal silicon switch,” Arya said in a client note.
The analyst is especially positive on valuation, which now trades at 21x PE “well below our 30%+ CY21-24 pf-EPS growth-rate.”
On the other hand, Arya is bearish on Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) on rising competitive, strategic, and financial headwinds. The analyst is calling for EPS of $0.81 on sales of $18.1 billion which compares to a consensus of $0.80 on revenue of $18.3 billion.
Moreover, the analyst sees a risk of a guidance miss - $18 billion vs $18.5 billion consensus and CY22 sales of $74 billion to $76 billion, lower than the consensus of $75.4 billion.
“We see modest 2-3% impact to CY22 on PC headwinds and believe this sort of “benign” INTC report would be positive for semis, especially AMD. Conversely, a >$3bn cut to CY22 sales (barring share shifts) could be perceived as bigger negative for semis/semicaps given INTC’s broad incumbency,” Arya added.

Analyst Sees Upside for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Stock
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | April 25, 2022
• Raymond James upgraded AMD to "strong buy" from "outperform"
• AMD is a staple on a list of names with the most options volume
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) has been sliding on the charts this month, after it was rejected by familiar pressure at the $125 level, as well as its 80-day moving average. However, Raymond James noted an attractive entry point for AMD, and sees potential for it to jump up to 80%. Despite supply chain concerns in the chip sector, the firm upgraded the stock to "strong buy" from "outperform" today.
Options traders have been eyeing AMD lately as well, as the stock has been a consistent name on Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White's list of names that have attracted the most weekly options volume in the last two weeks. During this time, 3,474,774 calls and 2,094,048 puts were exchanged. The weekly 4/22 100-strike camm and April 100 call were the most popular during this period.
Earnings are coming up for the semiconductor staple as well. The company's first-quarter report is due out after the close on Tuesday, May 3. The options pits are pricing in a 14.5% swing ahead of the event, which is much larger than the 5.1% move the stock has averaged after its last eight reports. Of these reports, only three next-day sessions closed higher, including a 5.1% upswing this past February.
Today, AMD is up 1% to trade at $89.02, and looking to snap a three-day losing streak. It's also worth noting that the stock's relative strength index (RSI) of 22.4 sits firmly in "oversold" territory, meaning the stock could already be due for a short-term bounce.

AMD Stock: Recent Selloff Creates Positive Risk-Reward - Wells Fargo
By: Investing.com | April 22, 2022
Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers sees a compelling risk-reward in Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) stock as shares trade nearly 40% lower year-to-end and near the 10-month low.
The recent underperformance in AMD shares, coupled with Rakers’ projection that the ongoing data center momentum should offset tempering PC expectations, makes the analyst positive on stock at current levels.
“AMD's valuation multiples now represent the lowest premium vs. the SOX and INTC that we have seen over the past 5-yrs - now trading at a ~21x 2023 P/E vs. ~33x 5-yr. median NTM P/E (see charts). We expect AMD to reiterate +31% 2022 organic (ex-XLNX) rev. growth outlook,” Rakers wrote in a client note.
Rakers says that the PC weakness is already discounted by investors.
“We think investor sentiment has adequately digested an expectation that PC shipments would decline in the mid-single-digit y/y range in 2022; AMD's ability to gain commercial share and high-end consumer/gaming mix are key considerations.”
Still, the analyst cut the price target to $140.00 per share from $180.00 amid incremental macro concerns.
AMD stock price is down half a percent in pre-open Friday.
