Where did this quote originate? I don't recall the U.S.A. government ever taking a position?????
No canal mention but overall anti-gov't opposition seems to be softening. I don't know why pro Ortega factions mention any USA backing of the anti-gov't protests unless our usual avoidance of, instead of trying to work with, dictatorships somehow had reared it's head.
Nicaraguan opposition announce strike plans
Sandinista supporters warn action is a bid to derail the government
NICARAGUAN opposition groups plan to hold a three-day strike later this month in what Sandinista supporters warn is a bid to cause disruption and derail government-initiated peace efforts.
Canal 10 Nicaragua announced the strike on Thursday evening, reporting from a paltry gathering in the capital Managua.
Opposition groups intend to try and bring the country to a standstill for three days at the end of August as they bid to overthrow the democratically elected Sandinista government and President Daniel Ortega.
It is not clear what the aims of Nicaragua’s opposition are beyond calls for the removal of Mr Ortega.
The strike is planned for August 22-25. But sources on the ground told the Star that the plans have no real support inside the country, except among the bosses and big business who will close down over the period.
They said: “The opposition is planning to hold a national strike for three days to pressure the government, but in reality it damages the economy of the country.
“There are very few private companies that support this. The Nicaraguan people are tired of this. The opposition want to steal our peace.”
The strike comes as government efforts to rebuild the country after last year’s violence gather pace.
Vice-President Rosario Murillo announced earlier this week that 6,000 peace commissions have been established across Nicaragua to mend the scars that remain following the Washington-backed attempted coup.
Meetings are held at all levels of the community in an attempt to build bridges and bring truth and reconciliation to Nicaragua.
Violence swept across the country last year after a bosses’ strike in protest at government welfare reforms which would have seen them pay more in contributions to Nicaraguan pension pots.
They favoured the International Monetary Fund (IMF) proposals which would have seen contributions rise for ordinary Nicaraguans as well as an increase in the retirement age.
More than 200 people were killed as armed right-wing gangs set up road blocks across the country. Sandinista supporters were targeted by the attacks, with the government eventually restoring order a few months later. Hundreds have been released from prison as part of a government agreed amnesty, despite having committed criminal acts. They include journalist Miguel Mora, who incited violent attacks on Sandinista supporters and allegedly called for Mr Ortega to be killed.
Despite this he has been gifted a press freedom award by New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and recently announced plans to run for Nicaraguan president.

Marines withdraw from Nicaragua, Jan. 2, 1933
By ANDREW GLASS 01/02/2019 01:36 PM EST
Beginning in 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt framed a “Big Stick” policy to advance U.S. interests and to restrict European influence in the Americas.
With the advent of the California gold rush, Nicaragua proved a popular interoceanic shortcut. Cornelius Vanderbilt’s steamship company transported supplies and prospectors from the Atlantic, along Nicaragua’s San Juan River, then across Lake Nicaragua to the Pacific.
In 1855, at the invitation of Nicaraguan liberals, a Tennessee adventurer named William Walker invaded Nicaragua with a small armed force in the hope of extending the Southern U.S. slave culture. Though Walker enjoyed initial success, when he presumed to establish himself as president of Nicaragua he was routed by the joint efforts of Nicaragua’s opposing political factions, Vanderbilt’s steamship company, the British government and other Central American republics. Walker narrowly escaped capture, only to surrender to the U.S. Navy in 1857.
In 1909, pursuant to Roosevelt’s Big Stick policy, the United States supported conservative-led forces rebelling against President José Santos Zelaya. American policy was driven by differences over control of the proposed cross-isthmus canal, and Zelaya’s efforts to regulate foreign access to Nicaraguan natural resources. On Nov. 18, 1909, U.S. warships were sent to the area after 500 revolutionaries (including two Americans) were executed under Zelaya’s orders. The U.S. also landed 400 Marines. Zelaya subsequently resigned.
In a 1912 effort to retain power, conservative elements within the government requested more aid; in response, the U.S. landed 2,700 more Marines.
In 1914, under the Bryan–Chamorro Treaty, the United States gained control over the proposed canal, as well as leases for potential canal defenses. Following a brief evacuation of the Marines, another violent conflict between liberals and conservatives broke out in 1926, which resulted in the Marines’ return. From 1927 until 1933, rebel general Augusto César Sandino led a sustained guerrilla war, first against the conservative regime and subsequently against the Marines, whom he fought for more than five years.
In the wake of the rebellion, the United States maintained a near-continuous presence in Nicaragua until this day in 1933, when in the closing months of President Herbert Hoover’s administration the U.S. 5th Marine Regiment withdrew from Nicaragua.
Before the Americans left, the regiment set up the Guardia Nacional — a powerful combined military and police force trained and equipped by the departing Americans and designed to remain loyal to U.S. interests.
Nevertheless, Nicaragua continued to be beset by a struggle between liberal and conservative forces, centered around the cities of León and Granada. Founded by the Spanish in the early 1550s, the two cities became competing power centers. Their rivalry often left Nicaragua vulnerable to outside interests even after the country gained independence from Spain in 1821.

More, a personal report is published today, September 8, 2018. I've posted the Link to the complete article below the 1st paragraph.
What I’ve Seen in Nicaragua
HAVANA TIMES – Over the last three weeks, I’ve been able to confirm with my own eyes the true dimension of what’s happening in Nicaragua. It’s a lot more terrible than what we see on the news. I’ve accompanied doctors working clandestinely to treat the young people wounded by bullets from Ortega’s police and paramilitaries, because in the public hospitals the doctors have been forbidden to help them. If they do so, they lose their jobs, as has already happened to dozens. I’ve seen how the police used a syringe to tattoo the letters “FSLN” (for the Sandinista Front) on the arm of a boy of 14.
https://havanatimes.org/?p=140642
This is from a somewhat current, like yesterday, Havana Times article where I thought your leadership enjoyed a friendly Communist Dictatorship relationship.
Admittedly the author uses charged language, like massacred, but people died none the less.
I'll post just the lead in paragraph and the link
"HAVANA TIMES – In the five months since the civic revolution began in Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega’s pro-government forces have massacred over 330 opposition protestors, injured over 2,000 and taken several hundred prisoners, many whom have been tortured and sexually abused."
https://havanatimes.org/?p=140642
A lot of water has ran under the bridge since YOUR 2015 article.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/05/politics/us-nicaragua-sanctions-violence-corruption/index.html As the relations with the United States widen.....
Xanadu... I believe your article and my article show an interesting playbook for Russia and China. As long as the United States has a strong presence in Panama, Russia and China will "require" A CANAL IN NICARAGUA....
https://thewire.in/external-affairs/silent-us-invasion-panama Wow! Did NOT know this was going on....Hellooooooo Nicaraguans Canal!!!!!!!
Will Nicaragua Become Russia’s ‘Cuba of the 21st Century?’
https://jamestown.org/program/will-nicaragua-become-russias-cuba-of-the-21st-century/
Just peaking in. Good thought provoking read. Go, go, go, We want a canal, WHEN?, we want it now.
Call me a CONSPIRACY NUT, but the "chain of events" are suspicious....... 1. Ortega announces that he wants a Canal and many Nicaraguans hit the streets protesting that the environment will be damaged and do not want construction..........2. Ortega has several Environmental Plans and studies done but are still dismissed by many Nicaraguans and protests continue.......3. Ortega announces that Social Security pension benefits will be CUT and Nicaraguans MUST PAY MORE INTO THE PENSION FUND to maintain it.......4. Nicaraguans take to the streets and PROTEST THE INCREASE IN PAYMENTS TO THE FUND AND THE DECREASE IN PAYMENTS FROM THE FUND IN RETIREMENT......ORTEGA NOW HAS A MANDATE FOR THE CANAL!!!!!!!!! He can simply tell Nicaraguans that Nicaragua is one of the poorest nations on planet earth. The SOCIAL SECURITY PENSION can not continue to pay out as it has and a DECREASE IN BENEFITS must occur.......We see how Nicaraguans react to a DECREASE in benefits.....RIOTS, DEATHS, ETC. Ortega can now put this to a vote...VERY DEMOCRATIC......He will not look like a dictator......he may even become more popular....He can simply let the people vote.... DO YOU WANT LESS SOCIAL SECURITY AND INCREASED TAXES ( to support the economic system ) or do you want a Canal which would DECREASE TAXES, INCREASE SOCIAL SECURITY PENSIONS, AND CREATE JOBS? Please take note: the People "PROTESTED THE CANAL" but the People "RIOTED A TAX INCREASE AND A BENEFIT DECREASE"...... Now we know how they will vote!
NOTE..I do not know the credentials of the man and wife team who wrote this opinion that was published in Kamloops This Week. Does seem to be researched well. I am intrigued by this near end of article comment. Any comment loophole lawyer? rlcombs2001@hotmail.com

Dyer: Nicaragua in ferment
Gwynne Dyer / Contributed
May 31, 2018 04:22 PM
From the Ceausescus (overthrown and shot in 1989) to the Mugabes (removed in a non-violent military coup in 2017), husband-and-wife teams running authoritarian regimes seem to have a particularly high casualty rate.
And now it may be the turn of the Nicaraguan team: President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice-President Rosario Murillo.
The protests that have convulsed Nicaragua for the past two months were initially triggered by a new five per cent tax on pensions and an equally modest increase in social-security contributions. It was an ill-judged attempt to balance the books on a fairly generous welfare system and the government quickly cancelled the changes once the demonstrations began.
Yet the protests continued and by now there are 90 people dead and almost 1,000 injured. The great majority of the victims are students and others who have been shot by the police or by gangs linked to the ruling Sandinista party that killed people while the security forces stood back and did not intervene.
It really is about the survival of the Ortega-Murillo regime now — and it is appropriate to call it that, although there are still more or less free elections in Nicaragua. Ortega is now in his third consecutive term, having removed the two-term limit in the constitution, and the electoral law has been changed to let a presidential candidate win with as little as 35 per cent of the vote (in a multi-candidate race).
Indeed, many Nicaraguans believe Ortega and his wife are now in the process of founding an actual dynasty.
“She’s not the vice-president; she’s the co-president,” said Agustín Jarquín, who was once a close political ally of Ortega’s.
And it’s true that Murillo is more likely to make statements on government policy than Ortega himself.
Meanwhile, powerful opponents of the Ortega-Murillo family within the Sandinista party have been systematically weeded out of the government. The supreme court is now stuffed with appointees loyal to the regime. And the Ortegas and their allies have large but ill-defined interests in TV stations, fuel companies and the proposed trans-Nicaragua rival to the Panama Canal.
It’s a strange place for once-radical young revolutionaries like Ortega and Murillo to have ended up. They met in exile in Costa Rica when the ruthless Somoza regime still ruled Nicaragua and rose to prominence together after the Sandinista revolution overthrew the Somozas in 1979.
They served the revolution loyally during the 1980s while the Reagan administration in Washington tried to destroy it using the CIA-backed Contra rebels in a war that killed 30,000 people. Ortega was even elected president in 1984, but then lost the 1990 election to a coalition of opposition parties.
He ran for president again in 1995 and in 2000 and lost to the more or less the same conservative coalition both times. It was during this long spell in the wilderness that he gradually realized that his more extreme ideas frightened a lot of people and began to tone them down. It may have been a purely tactical change at first, but if you say something often enough, you may start to believe it.
By the time Ortega returned to power in the 2006 election, he was a changed man. No more Marxist rhetoric and he was now presenting himself as a devout Catholic. After having five children together, he and Murillo finally got married in 2005 — in a Catholic church. And the truth is that he won that election largely thanks to a deal with the powerful Catholic Church that banned abortion in Nicaragua.
He has won two more elections since then and would now be classified as a man of the centre-left in most Western countries — pro-welfare state, but pro-capitalist too. Many leading figures in the Sandinista party have made the same journey with him and Murillo was probably already there.
Many hardcore Sandinistas are scandalized by these developments, but it’s a perfectly normal pattern in the aftermath of a revolution. Major advances in human rights may be preserved, but the ideology is steadily undermined by the stubborn realities of ordinary life. What is remarkable about Ortega and Murillo is that they have been able to work both sides of the street for so long.
The social welfare measures introduced by the Sandinistas in the 1980s survive, but Ortega and Murillo are far to the right of where they once were. The suspicion has grown that they are exploiting their political power to build their own business empire.
The protests against them certainly have right-wing support, but it is actually left-wing students who dominate the demonstrations in the streets.
So the Ortegas have probably reached the end of the road.
Nicaragua has not.

All you have to do is continue paying the fees and file the paperwork to keep a corporation going...... whoever ( I think we know who) it is, they have kept the corporation, the website, phone number, etc ongoing the entire time. The stock is still registered. It was NEVER deemed liquidated ( as in a bankruptcy) and still has an identification number with the brokerage firms.......

Accredited Business Consolidators Corp. to Form Central American Vehicle Rental Franchise |
DOYLESTOWN, Pa., April 23, 2010 The Company directed its attorneys to form a Nicaraguan, Costa Rican, and Panamanian corporation known as Grupo Accredited RAC, S.A. Concurrently, a corporation in Pennsylvania will be formed to hold the shares of the foreign enterprises. The Company believes the Pennsylvania holding corporation will be completed in ten days and the foreign corporations within four to six weeks. The first office will be in Managua. "We have preliminary agreements in place with several hotels to offer affordable car rentals to their guests with no hidden charges," said Denis Soto, who will be named Vice President of Accredited RAC.In Central America, car rental companies advertise low car rates while deceptively forcing clients to purchase insurance products that are not needed. "Every car rental company in Central America charges their client $12.00 per day for something called Additional Liability Insurance while the rental company maintains the absolute minimum amount of insurance required by law and pays less than $100.00 per car in annual liability insurance costs," Soto explained. "We'll be upfront and honest, yet we'll provide a fair commission to travel agents and hotels. We believe the word will spread quickly," Soto added The Company presently has an arrangement to lease a beginning fleet of 35 in Nicaragua. Accredited Business Consolidators Corp. Joins Calichi Sino Inc. Alliance to Offer Green Construction Products | |
DOYLESTOWN, Pa., April 26, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Accredited Business Consolidators Corp., (Pink Sheets:ACDU), previously announced that its subsidiary, Envirocare Corp., was working on a business venture to sell environmentally friendly cementitious products that contain reduced Portland cement. ACDU negotiated with multiple entities that offer green cementitious products. After a complete review, the Company determined that it would join an alliance between various professionals. The alliance formed a company, Calichi Sino Inc., to move forward with bringing green construction materials to market. ACDU will not hold a control position in the new entity; rather, it will directly and indirectly own about 20% of the alliance. However, the scope of the alliance will be much broader than a green concrete plant in Nicaragua. Rather, CSI already began negotiations for multiple projects. More importantly, the other members of the alliance include the creators of a green cement known as Zeobond. Zeobond's product, which is being produced and used in Australia, will be the starting point for CSI's offering. Additional members of the alliance include the founders of Harricrete Ltd. of Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies. Harricrete has extensive experience bringing cementitious products to market. Other participants in the alliance will be announced in the future as agreements are secured. Over the next month, ACDU and the other alliance members of CSI will continue the process of finishing the exact share structure of the new entity. Thereafter, it will create a registration statement for CSI. CSI's Central Index Key number with the Securities and Exchange Commission is 0001489668. Shareholders are invited to review filings with the CIK code when they are released to be informed of further details. ACDU believes its participation in CSI is an extraordinary opportunity as the alliance members are reputable and able to bring environmentally friendly building supplies to market. As stated, the alliance members are already offering green solutions to the construction industry and CSI will enhance the success of the numerous opportunities that will be presented through this venture The Calichi Sino Inc. logo is available at http://www.globenewswire.com/newsroom/prs/?pkgid=7382

The Company continues to restructure its Richwood Eco Ventures Inc. subsidiary. Acting President Gertzen Perez finished his term and assisted the Company make various contacts with third parties for potential joint ventures. Andy William will assume the role of Acting President until the Company can name a permanent successor. The Company is focusing on finding a partner that will be able to make use of the equipment we own. Several prospective business arrangements are being discussed with multiple parties that have existing wood processing or timber export businesses. Accredited Suppliers Corp. continues to operate its business at a profit; however, the operation remains small with only one vehicle on the road and a total of four agents. ASC is relying on moving forward with its registration statement so that it can raise additional capital and replicate its present operation on a larger scale. ASC streamlined its accounting procedures so that documents are provided in a timely manner to our bookkeepers. Presently, our Nicaraguan accountant is working on the financial reports from inception for this subsidiary. The Company expects the documents for Accredited RAC, the rental agency subsidiary, to be accepted this week by the Pennsylvania Secretary of State. The Company retained Attorney Harold Montiel from Managua, Nicaragua, to form the Nicaraguan entity. The Company understands that Costa Rican retail shop, Marilyn Boutique, will expand to Spain with its second retail shop before the end of the year. The Company agreed to assist the Costa Rican company which it owns 25% of. The Company believes that expansion in Europe, where there is an additional premium on unique culture-based clothing, will create substantial growth. The Company received a report from the executives of Soluciones Faciles, S.A., the Costa Rican enterprise that we own 25% of. The report indicates that during the experimental stage of the Company, it was able to receive a return of over 30% per annum on its loans - even factoring in defaults and costs.
