With a black mother of Bantu ethnicity and a white father of Swiss and German descent, raised in apartheid South Africa, Trevor Noah began his life whilst considered a crime by his own government. Born in 1984, when interracial unions were still forbidden, the comedian has come a long way from his humble upbringing in Johannesburg.
He began his career at the age of 18, starring in a soap opera and then went on to host his own radio show, "Noah's Ark", and eventually quit to focus on comedy.
Noah made a name for himself, attracting the attention of some of the world's most renowned comedians, like Jon Stewart. After moving to America in 2011, Noah would go on to become the first South African comedian to appear on "The Tonight Show" hosted by fellow comedian and actor Jimmy Fallon. After becoming a regular contributor to "The Daily Show", with over 200 writing credits under his belt, Jon Stewart handpicked him to be his successor, as host of "The Daily Show" - one of America's top political satire programs.
But as a foreigner in Trump's America, how does Noah's voice resonate? And can political satire be a force for change?

That right there is the motherfucking president of the motherfucked United States of America, seated and grinning while grim pandemonium goes on around him. And he's at a dinner at his golf resort in Florida, where he spent the weekend golfing. The dinner is for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan, who also golfed with the president, who happens to be a persimmon-topped wrecking ball named Donald Trump.
At dinner, the president and the PM were enjoying a salad. More precisely, they were enjoying "Mr. Trump's Wedge [sic - Wedgie ({linked in} http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=127554004 and preceding and following, http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=127560442 and preceding and following)] Salad," which is a chunk of iceberg lettuce coated in blue cheese dressing, bacon, and more blue cheese. Essentially, it's just edible plastic conveying cheese and bacon and cream to your bloodstream. Then, oh, the inconveniences of being president, North Korea tested [ http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/13/asia/north-korea-missile-differences/ ] an intermediate-range ballistic missile that landed in the Sea of Japan. It's kind of a big fucking deal because, see, North Korea has nukes and a mad leader with no checks on his madness, and Japan would be right in the crosshairs of any attack. Goddamnit, what about the main course?
So everyone leapt into action [ http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/12/politics/trump-shinzo-abe-mar-a-lago-north-korea/index.html ] to find out more and figure out how to respond to a direct provocation. That's the flurry of activity you see up there. It's not, by the way, an effort to move the conversation to a more secure location. Oh, no, that'd interrupt dinner, and there was some goddamned meat on the way. Thus, in the middle of the dining area at a big golf club with tons of people watching, everyone with Trump and Abe started to read classified documents and talk about classified information. Even more fucked up was that the room was dimly lit so they used their goddamn cell phone flashlights

Their easily-hackable phones. In the room where everything was being discussed. In front of dozens of civilians, many of whom were snapping photos of the events. As long as you paid your expensive dues, you could be there in that room. So, really, who the hell knows what agents of foreign governments could have been present?
This isn't about the level of transparency or whatever else you wanna make it about. Like so many things with Republicans, it's about the hypocrisy. Hillary Clinton's private email server was supposed to essentially allow ISIS to enter the country freely and kill all our dogs and enslave our wives. But here are seemingly multiple violations of any kind of safety protocols when it comes to dealing with classified material.
And even more fucked up is the center of this photo. President Trump, sitting calmly, not involved in any of the uproar, smiling and leaning on his hand, not a care in the entire goddamned world, preening and showing off for people who pay to be in his club, even as an American ally was facing what it considered to be an existential threat. Imagine that. Imagine so not giving a fuck that you couldn't even be bothered to pretend like this was a serious enough situation to not pose like a serene but stupid frog, let alone just take the fuckin' meeting to a private room. Imagine if President Oba...you know what? Fuck it. At this point, it's obvious that Republicans are mud-encrusted piglets, gleefully suckling at Trump's multiple teats while he gorges himself on the slops and shits all over the pen.
Trump is so removed from reality that, after making some brief remarks, he sauntered over to a wedding reception in Mar-a-Lago's ballroom to congratulate the newlyweds. And he really did say, "They've been members of this club for a long time. They've paid me a fortune."
And everyone just laughed like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Oklahoma Anti-Abortion Lawmaker Says Women Are Merely ‘Hosts’

On Tuesday, the Oklahoma state legislature will hold a hearing on a bill that would require a woman seeking an abortion to first get written permission from her male sexual partner. In an interview, the Republican lawmaker who authored the bill explained that a woman’s body, well, simply isn’t her own. Instead, a woman’s body is merely a “host.”
The Intercept [ https://theintercept.com/2017/02/13/oklahoma-lawmakers-want-men-to-approve-all-abortions/ (and see also e.g. http://www.vox.com/identities/2017/2/13/14598756/oklahoma-pregnant-women-hosts-men-approve-abortion )] has a detailed report about the bill, known as HB 1441 [ ], as well as another bill that would block women from aborting fetuses with genetic anomalies, called HB 1559. In a surprising move (as Oklahoma has passed 20 strict abortion regulations since 2011), the latter failed to pass last Wednesday while the former was tabled without comment. However, by Thursday, both measures were put back on the House Public Health Committee’s agenda, with a vote slated for February 14.
In an interview with the Intercept, Representative Justin Humphrey explained why he decided to author HB 1441. His first intention with the bill, he said, was to ensure men would have to pay child support from the beginning. He also wanted to give men a say in the decision of whether a woman gets an abortion or not, because women tend to make these decisions with the mistaken belief that their bodies are their own, he said.

I’m like, hey, your body is your body and be responsible with it. But after you’re irresponsible then don’t claim, well, I can just go and do this with another body, when you’re the host and you invited that in.”

Oklahoma Republican stands by calling pregnant women 'hosts'

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Republican lawmaker from southeast Oklahoma who described a pregnant woman as a "host" is standing by his use of the term, saying his intent was not to offend anyone.
State Rep. Justin Humphrey of Lane said Monday he didn't know of a better term to describe a pregnant woman and apologized to anyone who took offense.
Humphrey used the term while discussing his bill that would require women seeking an abortion to first obtain the written informed consent of the father. The bill is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in a House committee.
State Rep. Emily Virgin described Humphrey's comment as "incredibly disrespectful."
Oklahoma has passed some of the strictest anti-abortion bills in the country, although at least five have been struck down by the courts in recent years.

House committee changes mind, passes two bills limiting abortion

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma House of Representatives Public Health Committee reversed itself on one abortion rights bill Tuesday and passed a separate one that would essentially give men the final say on most abortions.

House bill 1549 by Rep. George Faught, R-Muskogee, bars abortions sought solely because of indications of fetal abnormalities. The bill in its original form stalled on a 4-4 vote last week in Public Health, but the amended version passed 5-2 Tuesday ...

The practical application of the bill in its amended form was not immediately clear, since it seems to allow women to get around the provision by simply saying the abortion is not because of fetal abnormalities.
Faught said the bill "mirrors" one signed into law several years ago that bars abortions because of gender.
Also passing 5-2 was HB 1441, by Rep. Jason Humphrey, R-Lane. Humphrey's bill would require women to obtain the written consent of the fetus' father before obtaining an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest or medical emergency.
Humphrey, who caused something of a stir in recent days by referring to pregnant women as "hosts," said his bill is "not just about abortion. It's about trying to get men involved."
Both bills are now eligible for consideration by the full House.

WASHINGTON - For four days, President Trump’s national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, had been at the eye of a storm over his contacts with a Russian diplomat [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/09/us/flynn-is-said-to-have-talked-to-russians-about-sanctions-before-trump-took-office.html ], his truthfulness with other officials about the exchange, and the deepening chaos inside the National Security Council [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/12/us/politics/national-security-council-turmoil.html ].
Yet on Monday afternoon, Mr. Trump faced reporters and did not get a single question about his embattled aide, who ended up resigning before the day’s end [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/13/us/politics/donald-trump-national-security-adviser-michael-flynn.html ]. It was the second time in three days he held a news conference and was not asked about a news story that has dominated front pages and cable news coverage.
It is not that members of the White House press corps did not want to ask about Mr. Flynn. Several reporters stood up at the end of Monday’s news conference, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, and shouted questions about Mr. Flynn, which the president ignored.
But the White House steered the formal questions to two conservative-leaning news organizations, which chose to ask Mr. Trump and Mr. Trudeau general queries about trade and immigration, the subjects of his first meeting with the prime minister.
As a result, Mr. Trump did not address Mr. Flynn’s status for days after The New York Times and The Washington Post reported on Thursday that he had discussed American sanctions against Russia with Moscow’s ambassador to Washington, Sergey I. Kislyak, weeks before Mr. Trump took office. Those reports contradicted earlier statements by several Trump officials, including Vice President Mike Pence.
Mr. Trump was also not asked about photographs of him being briefed on Saturday night after North Korea fired a ballistic missile, a highly sensitive deliberation that took place in full view of other patrons [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/13/us/politics/mar-a-lago-north-korea-trump.html ] in a public dining room at his Florida club, Mar-a-Lago.

Senators in both parties have viewed an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in which President Donald Trump's Labor Secretary nominee Andrew Puzder's former wife leveled allegations of physical abuse against him, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The decades-old video, which is not easily found, has been provided by the Oprah Winfrey Network, those sources said. The video has been provided to senators in a Capitol Hill office building, according to people who have seen it. OWN did not immediately comment for this story.
"I’ve arranged for senators on the committee to see that ... I thought that was a reasonable request. No reason not to see it," said Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.). "That happened 27 years ago. His former wife has said it was all not true. She has reiterated that in a heartfelt letter to members of the committee and has been willing to talk to members of the committee so I don’t think that’s an issue. “
The episode is called "High-Class Battered Women," according to a source familiar with the matter. It aired in March, 1990.

The acting attorney general informed the Trump White House late last month that she believed Michael Flynn had misled senior administration officials about the nature of his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States, and warned that the national security adviser was potentially vulnerable to Russian blackmail, current and former U.S. officials said.

U.S. intelligence reports during the 2016 presidential campaign showed that Kislyak was in touch with Flynn, officials said. Communications between the two continued after Trump’s victory on Nov. 8, according to officials with access to intelligence reports on the matter.
Kislyak, in a brief interview with The Post, confirmed having contacts with Flynn before and after the election, but he declined to say what was discussed.

In the YouTube clip, a pair of South Asian men wearing costume loincloths held up a banner that read, “DEATH TO ALL JEWS.”
They danced and laughed, while in a separate screen the YouTuber named Felix Kjellberg (also known by his stage name PewDiePie) covered his mouth with his hands. “I don’t feel too proud of this, I’m not going to lie,” Kjellberg said in the Jan. 11 video, which had been viewed more than 6 million times [ https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2607868/pewdiepie-in-anti-semitic-storm-after-paying-men-to-unveil-sign-stating-death-to-all-jews-hits-youtube/ ] before its removal.
Kjellberg, a 27-year-old Swedish comedian, had paid the men to hold up the sign. “I’m not anti-Semitic or whatever it’s called,” he said as he watched. “It was a funny meme, and I didn’t think it would work.”
Kjellberg is the most popular YouTube star on the planet. His videos have been viewed collectively more than 14 billion times. With such a massive audience came lucrative advertising and business deals, working with YouTube and the Walt Disney Co.
That was, until this week, when both YouTube and Disney ended their business ties with one of their most famous personalities.

What California’s Dam Crisis Says About the Changing Climate

STANFORD, Calif. — After five years of record-setting drought, much of California is being pummeled by an extremely wet winter. The disaster unfolding at Oroville, where precipitation is more than double the average [ https://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/products/PLOT_ESI.pdf ], is the latest reminder that the United States needs a climate-smart upgrade of our water management systems.
In the West, much of our water infrastructure is old. Oroville Dam, north of Sacramento, was completed in 1968, nearly a half a century ago. Other major components of our water system are generations older, and maintenance has not been a priority. The damage to Oroville Dam, where the primary spillway developed a giant gash and the emergency spillway threatened to erode, illustrates the hazard of relying on aging infrastructure to protect us from extreme weather.
But age and upkeep are not the only problems. Our water system was designed and built in an old climate, one in which extremely warm years were less common and snowpack was more reliable. Here in the West, we use the same dams and reservoirs for both water storage and flood control, so during the wet season, reservoir managers continuously balance the dual pressures of storing as much water as possible for the dry summer and releasing sufficient water to create room for the next storm.
This system relies on the natural reservoir of mountain snowpack, which melts gradually over the spring and summer. While it is well known that much of the West relies on snowpack for water storage, the vital role of snowpack in flood control is considerably less appreciated. When precipitation falls as snow, it stays in the mountains rather than flowing into reservoirs. This leaves more room in reservoirs to prevent flooding downstream during heavy rainfall.
The recent drought has highlighted the pressure that a changing climate puts on a snowpack-dependent water system. With the shift toward more rain rather than snow, and the earlier melting of the snowpack, water managers need to release water more frequently for flood control. This dynamic is playing out in Oroville now, with the state’s water managers racing to empty water from the dam’s reservoir in advance of storms forecast to arrive Wednesday. Because these storms are relatively warm, they are likely to bring rain to the surrounding mountains, speeding the flow of water behind the dam.
The juxtaposition of five years of hot, dry conditions followed by more rain than reservoirs can store may seem incongruous. However, this is exactly what climate scientists have predicted for California since at least the 1980s [ http://www.slideshare.net/Revkin/endless-summer-living-with-the-greenhouse-effect ]: protracted periods of warm, dry conditions punctuated by intense wet spells, with more rain and less snow, causing both drought and floods. Recent work from my lab shows that in fact this pattern is already emerging [ http://www.pnas.org/content/112/13/3931.abstract ], with the conditions that create extremely warm dry years and extremely wet years both becoming more frequent [ http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/2/4/e1501344 ].
The other bitter reality is that this extremely wet winter will not wash away the drought. Depending where one looks, California lost out on one to three full years of precipitation from 2012 to 2016. That is a lot of water to make up in one year, and as of last week almost half of California was still in a state of drought [ http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/Home/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA ]. The moisture deficits that have accumulated during the drought have not been seen in our lifetimes. They have caused thousands of California residents to go without running water, resulted in groundwater contamination and permanent loss of aquifer storage capacity [ https://ca.water.usgs.gov/data/drought/ ], and have severely stressed tens of millions of trees [ http://www.pnas.org/content/113/2/E249.abstract ]. As a result, even after this wet year, rural communities, groundwater aquifers and forest ecosystems will still feel the effects of the drought.

President Donald Trump has a way with scandal. His biggest controversies are so huge, so ludicrously bamboozling, that they suck up much of the attention in the country. The smaller disputes facing his staff can therefore slip by unnoticed. In his three-week-old administration, perhaps no man has benefited from this more than Scott Pruitt, Trump’s nominee to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the current attorney general of Oklahoma.
In the past week, Scott Pruitt has gotten sued by his own state’s ACLU, defied oversight requests from Senate Democrats, and ridden roughshod on his own state’s public-records law. In any other administration, that level of dispute might have made the front page. Now, Democrats will be lucky to cram it into the back of a news cycle before the Senate votes on Pruitt’s nomination at the end of this week.
This is a lost opportunity for anyone who cares about environmental protection at the national level. The nomination of Betsy DeVos, a Republican donor [ http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/trailguide/la-na-trailguide-updates-betsy-devos-hearing-donations-1484703816-htmlstory.html ] who appeared not to know about basic federal education law [ http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2017/01/18/six-astonishing-things-betsy-devos-said-and-refused-to-say-at-her-confirmation-hearing/ ], led to constituents clogging Senate switchboards. But the EPA wields much more power over air and water pollution than the Department of Education does over schools. And unlike DeVos, Pruitt is a tireless and knowledgable advocate for his cause of cutting environmental protections. He knows the statutes that govern the EPA, and (like the Obama administration) he knows how to interpret them to bring about his policy ends.

Hate groups increase for second consecutive year as Trump electrifies radical right
The number of hate groups in the United States rose for a second year in a row in 2016 as the radical right was energized by the candidacy of Donald Trump, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) annual census of hate groups [ https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map ] and other extremist organizations, released today.

The most dramatic growth was the near-tripling of anti-Muslim hate groups [ https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/anti-muslim ] – from 34 in 2015 to 101 last year.
The growth has been accompanied by a rash of crimes targeting Muslims, including an arson that destroyed a mosque in Victoria, Texas, just hours after the Trump administration announced an executive order suspending travel from some predominantly Muslim countries. The latest FBI statistics show that hate crimes against Muslims grew by 67 percent in 2015 [ https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2016/11/14/anti-muslim-hate-crimes-surged-last-year-fueled-hateful-campaign ], the year in which Trump launched his campaign.
The report [ https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/2017/year-hate-and-extremism ], contained in the Spring 2017 issue of the SPLC’s Intelligence Report, includes the Hate Map [ https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map ] showing the names, types and locations of hate groups across the country.
The SPLC found that the number of hate groups operating in 2016 rose to 917 – up from 892 in 2015. The number is 101 shy of the all-time record set in 2011, but high by historic standards.
“2016 was an unprecedented year for hate,” said Mark Potok, senior fellow and editor of the Intelligence Report. “The country saw a resurgence of white nationalism that imperils the racial progress we’ve made, along with the rise of a president whose policies reflect the values of white nationalists. In Steve Bannon, these extremists think they finally have an ally who has the president's ear.”
The increase in anti-Muslim hate was fueled by Trump’s incendiary rhetoric, including his campaign pledge to bar Muslims from entering the United States, as well as anger over terrorist attacks such as the June massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando.
The overall number of hate groups likely understates the real level of organized hatred in America as a growing number of extremists operate mainly online and are not formally affiliated with hate groups.
Aside from its annual census of extremist groups, the SPLC found that Trump’s rhetoric reverberated across the nation in other ways. In the first 10 days after his election, the SPLC documented 867 bias-related incidents, including more than 300 that targeted immigrants or Muslims.
Also, in a post-election SPLC survey of 10,000 educators, 90 percent said the climate at their schools had been negatively affected by the campaign. Eighty percent described heightened anxiety and fear among students, particularly immigrants, Muslims and African Americans. Numerous teachers reported the use of slurs, derogatory language and extremist symbols in their classrooms.

‘Real News’ Joins the White House Briefing Room

Among the herd of reporters filing past an oil portrait of Hillary Clinton in the vaulted Center Hall of the White House on Monday afternoon walked Jim Hoft, publisher of the Gateway Pundit, a conservative blog founded at the outset of George W. Bush’s second term.
It was a banner moment for the decade-old website, known for reporting obvious hoaxes as legitimate news and headlines such as: “EXPOSED=>HILLARY HITMAN Breaks Silence” and “Dental Expert: Hillary Clinton Is Suffering From Serious Gum Infection” and “One Week After Election Loss Hillary Clinton Looks Like Death.”
Hoft was on his way to his first White House news conference in the company of self-described “brand strategist” Lucian Wintrich, the Gateway Pundit’s inaugural White House correspondent, who for his first day on the job wore a blue tie studded with elephants in every color of the rainbow to announce his gay Republican pride.
Briefly disoriented upon entering the majestic East Room, the pair soon located the gold-painted chairs that had been reserved for them and settled in for President Donald Trump’s joint appearance with the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.
Gateway Pundit’s mission in expanding the website’s White House coverage is, according to Wintrich — a 2012 Bard College graduate with ruffled hair and tortoise-rimmed glasses who could pass for a precociously dressed high school student —“to help drain the press swamp” by covering the press corps’ “very leftist and biased reporting.” Their arrival, at the invitation of Trump’s team, represents the latest in the tug of war between the administration and the mainstream media for control of The Narrative.
All administrations play politics with media access. Barack Obama circumvented the media filter by granting sit-downs to YouTube stars, and, at one infamous 2005 news conference, George W. Bush called on a sycophantic conservative blogger who, it was later revealed, worked as a male prostitute before being given a White House press pass.
But none of that matches the early efforts of the Trump administration, which has labeled the media “the opposition party” in a struggle to define the nature of reality itself.
To that end, the Trump team has gotten to work quickly, stacking its briefings in its favor. In its first week in the White House, Trump’s communications team installed screens in the briefing room to allow journalists outside Washington — including conservative talk radio hosts — to participate. Sean Spicer — the White House press secretary who has achieved a perverse form of celebrity in the form of a brutal impersonation on “Saturday Night Live” — has also taken to calling on pro-Trump news outlets in an apparent attempt to deflect hard questions.
On Friday, at a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump called only on outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch, who has aggressively courted the new president and whose flagship newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, is being roiled by the discontent of reporters who feel it has been too soft on Trump (at a staff meeting on Monday, the paper’s editor dismissed such concerns as “fake news”).
On Monday, in the minutes before Trump and Trudeau appeared, a correspondent for One America News, a fledgling network that has emerged as a consistent Trump cheerleader to the nationalist right of Fox News, stood for a live shot at the front of the East Room next to Fox’s John Roberts and CNN’s Sara Murray.
During the news conference, the only questions from American outlets went to the right-leaning Daily Caller and to Sinclair Broadcasting Network’s WJLA, which reportedly struck a deal with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, during the campaign to gain more access to Trump in exchange for less-critical coverage. Both reporters conspicuously avoided asking Trump about the hottest story of the day: the status of embattled national security adviser Michael Flynn, who resigned hours later over revelations he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

An influential science advisory group formed by the National Academy of Sciences [ http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/national_academy_of_sciences/index.html ] and the National Academy of Medicine on Tuesday lent its support to a once-unthinkable proposition: the modification of human embryos to create genetic traits that can be passed down to future generations.
This type of human gene editing has long been seen as an ethical minefield. Researchers fear that the techniques used to prevent genetic diseases might also be used to enhance intelligence, for example, or to create people physically suited to particular tasks, like serving as soldiers.
The advisory group endorsed only alterations designed to prevent babies from acquiring genes known to cause “serious diseases and disability,” and only when there is no “reasonable alternative.” The report provides an explicit rationale for genetic research that the federal government has avoided supporting until now, although the work is being pursued in countries like Sweden and China.
So-called germ line engineering might allow people to have biological children without fear that they have passed on the genes for diseases like Huntington’s, Tay-Sachs and beta thalassemia [ http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/thalassemia/overview.html ], and without discarding embryos carrying the disease-causing mutations, as is often done now. Harvard and M.I.T. Scientists Win Gene-Editing Patent Fight

The Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., will retain potentially lucrative rights to a powerful gene-editing technique that could lead to major advances in medicine and agriculture, the federal Patent and Trademark Office ruled on Wednesday.
The decision, in a bitterly fought dispute closely watched by scientists and the biotechnology industry, was a blow to the University of California, often said to be the birthplace of the technique, which is known as Crispr-Cas9.
An appeals board of the patent office ruled that the gene-editing inventions claimed by the two institutions were separate and do not overlap.
The result is that the Broad Institute, a research center affiliated with M.I.T. and Harvard, gets to retain more than a dozen patents it has already been granted on the use of the Crispr technique to modify DNA in the cells of humans, animals and plants.
“It seems to be a decisive victory for the Broad Institute,” said Jacob S. Sherkow, an associate professor at New York Law School who has followed the case closely.
The Broad Institute, in a statement, said it agreed with the decision. Officials at the University of California said they were considering an appeal, although they noted the ruling left the door open for the university to obtain its own patents covering the use of Crispr for all types of cells.
“They have a patent on green tennis balls; we will have a patent on all tennis balls,” Jennifer Doudna, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said in a phone call with reporters. She has been widely credited as an inventor of the gene-editing technique.
Ultimately, companies wanting to apply Crispr for use in medicine, agriculture or other fields might need licenses from both the Broad Institute and the University of California, a lawyer for the university said. However, Professor Sherkow said he was doubtful that the university could obtain a broad patent, given the wording of Wednesday’s decision.
Crispr has generated excitement among biologists because the technique makes it relatively simple to change particular letters in an organism’s DNA, much like using word processing software to search for particular words and then deleting or replacing them.
That could allow for the development of new disease treatments that would fix defective genes in the human body. Crispr could also make it more practical to alter the DNA of human embryos, making changes that could be passed to future generations.

If Crispr lives up to its promise, the patents on the technique could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, or even more. However, related techniques, such as gene therapy and RNA interference, have also been described as having great promise and have resulted in few or no medical treatments so far.
Several companies are trying to develop medical treatments using Crispr, although they are in the early stage of development.

A hearing in El Paso County in Texas went from ordinary to “unprecedented” last week when half a dozen Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents showed up at a courthouse where an undocumented woman was seeking a protective order against the boyfriend she accused of abusing her.
The woman, a citizen of Mexico who was living in El Paso had been driven to the courthouse by a victim’s advocate from the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence, a shelter for victims of domestic abuse where she had been living.
She left under arrest.
“This is really unprecedented,” El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal told The Washington Post.
It was the first time in her 23 years at the courthouse, Bernal said, that she can remember ICE agents making their presence known during a protective order hearing. The agents had come to stake out the woman, identified by her initials I.E.G., because, Bernal speculates, they likely received a tip from the only other person who knew the time and place of the hearing — the woman’s alleged abuser.

(JTA) — A South Carolina man who ranted against Jews was arrested for buying a gun for a shooting “in the spirit of” a white supremacist who killed nine at a black church, according to a federal complaint.
Benjamin Thomas Samuel McDowell, a former convict with connections to white supremacists, was arrested Wednesday after he bought a handgun from an undercover FBI agent, the New York Daily News reported [ http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/s-man-allegedly-planned-attack-temple-dylann-roof-article-1.2974465 ].
McDowell, 29, allegedly told the agent that he was inspired by Dylann Roof, who was sentenced to death last month for the killings at the Charleston church in 2015, and that he wanted to commit a “big scale” attack and write on the wall of the building “In the spirit of Dylann Roof.”
McDowell had not decided on the location for his intended attack, according to the complaint, but had shared on his Facebook a link to a local synagogue, Temple Emanu-El in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with the message “I love love to act what u think.”
He also seemed to claim that Jews were out to kill white people, writing on his Facebook page, “All they wanne do is stay loaded on drugs the Jews put here to destory white man and they fest on the drugs (sic),” according to the complaint.

Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn denied to FBI agents in an interview last month that he had discussed U.S. sanctions against Russia with that country’s ambassador to the United States before President Trump took office, contradicting the contents of intercepted communications collected by intelligence agencies, current and former U.S. officials said.
The Jan. 24 interview potentially puts Flynn in legal jeopardy, as lying to the FBI is a felony, but any decision to prosecute would ultimately lie with the Justice Department. Some officials said bringing a case could prove difficult in part because Flynn may attempt to parse the definition of sanctions.
A spokesman for Flynn said he had no response. The FBI declined to comment.

With a black mother of Bantu ethnicity and a white father of Swiss and German descent, raised in apartheid South Africa, Trevor Noah began his life whilst considered a crime by his own government. Born in 1984, when interracial unions were still forbidden, the comedian has come a long way from his humble upbringing in Johannesburg.
He began his career at the age of 18, starring in a soap opera and then went on to host his own radio show, "Noah's Ark", and eventually quit to focus on comedy.
Noah made a name for himself, attracting the attention of some of the world's most renowned comedians, like Jon Stewart. After moving to America in 2011, Noah would go on to become the first South African comedian to appear on "The Tonight Show" hosted by fellow comedian and actor Jimmy Fallon. After becoming a regular contributor to "The Daily Show", with over 200 writing credits under his belt, Jon Stewart handpicked him to be his successor, as host of "The Daily Show" - one of America's top political satire programs.

Donald Trump's rallies enacted how Trump and his followers would like the country to be. They were, in essence, identity festivals.
Trump succeeded by providing a categorical grid—a clear definition of groups and intergroup relations—that allowed many Americans to make sense of their lived experiences.
Within this framework, he established himself as a prototypical American and a voice for people who otherwise felt voiceless.
His rivals did not deploy the skills of identity leadership to present an inclusive narrative of “us.” In that context, Trump had a relatively free run.

That right there is the motherfucking president of the motherfucked United States of America, seated and grinning while grim pandemonium goes on around him. And he's at a dinner at his golf resort in Florida, where he spent the weekend golfing. The dinner is for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan, who also golfed with the president, who happens to be a persimmon-topped wrecking ball named Donald Trump.
At dinner, the president and the PM were enjoying a salad. More precisely, they were enjoying "Mr. Trump's Wedge [sic - Wedgie ({linked in} http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=127554004 and preceding and following, http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=127560442 and preceding and following)] Salad," which is a chunk of iceberg lettuce coated in blue cheese dressing, bacon, and more blue cheese. Essentially, it's just edible plastic conveying cheese and bacon and cream to your bloodstream. Then, oh, the inconveniences of being president, North Korea tested [ http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/13/asia/north-korea-missile-differences/ ] an intermediate-range ballistic missile that landed in the Sea of Japan. It's kind of a big fucking deal because, see, North Korea has nukes and a mad leader with no checks on his madness, and Japan would be right in the crosshairs of any attack. Goddamnit, what about the main course?
So everyone leapt into action [ http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/12/politics/trump-shinzo-abe-mar-a-lago-north-korea/index.html ] to find out more and figure out how to respond to a direct provocation. That's the flurry of activity you see up there. It's not, by the way, an effort to move the conversation to a more secure location. Oh, no, that'd interrupt dinner, and there was some goddamned meat on the way. Thus, in the middle of the dining area at a big golf club with tons of people watching, everyone with Trump and Abe started to read classified documents and talk about classified information. Even more fucked up was that the room was dimly lit so they used their goddamn cell phone flashlights

Their easily-hackable phones. In the room where everything was being discussed. In front of dozens of civilians, many of whom were snapping photos of the events. As long as you paid your expensive dues, you could be there in that room. So, really, who the hell knows what agents of foreign governments could have been present?
This isn't about the level of transparency or whatever else you wanna make it about. Like so many things with Republicans, it's about the hypocrisy. Hillary Clinton's private email server was supposed to essentially allow ISIS to enter the country freely and kill all our dogs and enslave our wives. But here are seemingly multiple violations of any kind of safety protocols when it comes to dealing with classified material.
And even more fucked up is the center of this photo. President Trump, sitting calmly, not involved in any of the uproar, smiling and leaning on his hand, not a care in the entire goddamned world, preening and showing off for people who pay to be in his club, even as an American ally was facing what it considered to be an existential threat. Imagine that. Imagine so not giving a fuck that you couldn't even be bothered to pretend like this was a serious enough situation to not pose like a serene but stupid frog, let alone just take the fuckin' meeting to a private room. Imagine if President Oba...you know what? Fuck it. At this point, it's obvious that Republicans are mud-encrusted piglets, gleefully suckling at Trump's multiple teats while he gorges himself on the slops and shits all over the pen.
Trump is so removed from reality that, after making some brief remarks, he sauntered over to a wedding reception in Mar-a-Lago's ballroom to congratulate the newlyweds. And he really did say, "They've been members of this club for a long time. They've paid me a fortune."
And everyone just laughed like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Oklahoma Anti-Abortion Lawmaker Says Women Are Merely ‘Hosts’

On Tuesday, the Oklahoma state legislature will hold a hearing on a bill that would require a woman seeking an abortion to first get written permission from her male sexual partner. In an interview, the Republican lawmaker who authored the bill explained that a woman’s body, well, simply isn’t her own. Instead, a woman’s body is merely a “host.”
The Intercept [ https://theintercept.com/2017/02/13/oklahoma-lawmakers-want-men-to-approve-all-abortions/ (and see also e.g. http://www.vox.com/identities/2017/2/13/14598756/oklahoma-pregnant-women-hosts-men-approve-abortion )] has a detailed report about the bill, known as HB 1441 [ ], as well as another bill that would block women from aborting fetuses with genetic anomalies, called HB 1559. In a surprising move (as Oklahoma has passed 20 strict abortion regulations since 2011), the latter failed to pass last Wednesday while the former was tabled without comment. However, by Thursday, both measures were put back on the House Public Health Committee’s agenda, with a vote slated for February 14.
In an interview with the Intercept, Representative Justin Humphrey explained why he decided to author HB 1441. His first intention with the bill, he said, was to ensure men would have to pay child support from the beginning. He also wanted to give men a say in the decision of whether a woman gets an abortion or not, because women tend to make these decisions with the mistaken belief that their bodies are their own, he said.

I’m like, hey, your body is your body and be responsible with it. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Republican lawmaker from southeast Oklahoma who described a pregnant woman as a "host" is standing by his use of the term, saying his intent was not to offend anyone.
State Rep. Justin Humphrey of Lane said Monday he didn't know of a better term to describe a pregnant woman and apologized to anyone who took offense.
Humphrey used the term while discussing his bill that would require women seeking an abortion to first obtain the written informed consent of the father. The bill is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in a House committee.
State Rep. Emily Virgin described Humphrey's comment as "incredibly disrespectful."
Oklahoma has passed some of the strictest anti-abortion bills in the country, although at least five have been struck down by the courts in recent years.

House committee changes mind, passes two bills limiting abortion

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma House of Representatives Public Health Committee reversed itself on one abortion rights bill Tuesday and passed a separate one that would essentially give men the final say on most abortions.

House bill 1549 by Rep. George Faught, R-Muskogee, bars abortions sought solely because of indications of fetal abnormalities. The bill in its original form stalled on a 4-4 vote last week in Public Health, but the amended version passed 5-2 Tuesday ...

The practical application of the bill in its amended form was not immediately clear, since it seems to allow women to get around the provision by simply saying the abortion is not because of fetal abnormalities.
Faught said the bill "mirrors" one signed into law several years ago that bars abortions because of gender.
Also passing 5-2 was HB 1441, by Rep. Jason Humphrey, R-Lane. Humphrey's bill would require women to obtain the written consent of the fetus' father before obtaining an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest or medical emergency.
Humphrey, who caused something of a stir in recent days by referring to pregnant women as "hosts," said his bill is "not just about abortion. It's about trying to get men involved."
Both bills are now eligible for consideration by the full House.

WASHINGTON - For four days, President Trump’s national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, had been at the eye of a storm over his contacts with a Russian diplomat [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/09/us/flynn-is-said-to-have-talked-to-russians-about-sanctions-before-trump-took-office.html ], his truthfulness with other officials about the exchange, and the deepening chaos inside the National Security Council [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/12/us/politics/national-security-council-turmoil.html ].
Yet on Monday afternoon, Mr. Trump faced reporters and did not get a single question about his embattled aide, who ended up resigning before the day’s end [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/13/us/politics/donald-trump-national-security-adviser-michael-flynn.html ]. It was the second time in three days he held a news conference and was not asked about a news story that has dominated front pages and cable news coverage.
It is not that members of the White House press corps did not want to ask about Mr. Flynn. Several reporters stood up at the end of Monday’s news conference, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, and shouted questions about Mr. Flynn, which the president ignored.
But the White House steered the formal questions to two conservative-leaning news organizations, which chose to ask Mr. Trump and Mr. Trudeau general queries about trade and immigration, the subjects of his first meeting with the prime minister.
As a result, Mr. Trump did not address Mr. Flynn’s status for days after The New York Times and The Washington Post reported on Thursday that he had discussed American sanctions against Russia with Moscow’s ambassador to Washington, Sergey I. Kislyak, weeks before Mr. Trump took office. Those reports contradicted earlier statements by several Trump officials, including Vice President Mike Pence.
Mr. Trump was also not asked about photographs of him being briefed on Saturday night after North Korea fired a ballistic missile, a highly sensitive deliberation that took place in full view of other patrons [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/13/us/politics/mar-a-lago-north-korea-trump.html ] in a public dining room at his Florida club, Mar-a-Lago.

Senators in both parties have viewed an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in which President Donald Trump's Labor Secretary nominee Andrew Puzder's former wife leveled allegations of physical abuse against him, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The decades-old video, which is not easily found, has been provided by the Oprah Winfrey Network, those sources said. The video has been provided to senators in a Capitol Hill office building, according to people who have seen it. OWN did not immediately comment for this story.
"I’ve arranged for senators on the committee to see that ... I thought that was a reasonable request. No reason not to see it," said Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.). "That happened 27 years ago. His former wife has said it was all not true. She has reiterated that in a heartfelt letter to members of the committee and has been willing to talk to members of the committee so I don’t think that’s an issue. “

The acting attorney general informed the Trump White House late last month that she believed Michael Flynn had misled senior administration officials about the nature of his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States, and warned that the national security adviser was potentially vulnerable to Russian blackmail, current and former U.S. officials said.

Anti-Semitic jokes cause YouTube, Disney to distance themselves from PewDiePie

In the YouTube clip, a pair of South Asian men wearing costume loincloths held up a banner that read, “DEATH TO ALL JEWS.”
They danced and laughed, while in a separate screen the YouTuber named Felix Kjellberg (also known by his stage name PewDiePie) covered his mouth with his hands. “I don’t feel too proud of this, I’m not going to lie,” Kjellberg said in the Jan. 11 video, which had been viewed more than 6 million times [ https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2607868/pewdiepie-in-anti-semitic-storm-after-paying-men-to-unveil-sign-stating-death-to-all-jews-hits-youtube/ ] before its removal.
Kjellberg, a 27-year-old Swedish comedian, had paid the men to hold up the sign. “I’m not anti-Semitic or whatever it’s called,” he said as he watched. “It was a funny meme, and I didn’t think it would work.”
Kjellberg is the most popular YouTube star on the planet. His videos have been viewed collectively more than 14 billion times. With such a massive audience came lucrative advertising and business deals, working with YouTube and the Walt Disney Co.
That was, until this week, when both YouTube and Disney ended their business ties with one of their most famous personalities.

What California’s Dam Crisis Says About the Changing Climate

STANFORD, Calif. — After five years of record-setting drought, much of California is being pummeled by an extremely wet winter. The disaster unfolding at Oroville, where precipitation is more than double the average [ https://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/products/PLOT_ESI.pdf ], is the latest reminder that the United States needs a climate-smart upgrade of our water management systems.
In the West, much of our water infrastructure is old. Oroville Dam, north of Sacramento, was completed in 1968, nearly a half a century ago. Other major components of our water system are generations older, and maintenance has not been a priority. The damage to Oroville Dam, where the primary spillway developed a giant gash and the emergency spillway threatened to erode, illustrates the hazard of relying on aging infrastructure to protect us from extreme weather.
But age and upkeep are not the only problems. Our water system was designed and built in an old climate, one in which extremely warm years were less common and snowpack was more reliable. Here in the West, we use the same dams and reservoirs for both water storage and flood control, so during the wet season, reservoir managers continuously balance the dual pressures of storing as much water as possible for the dry summer and releasing sufficient water to create room for the next storm.
This system relies on the natural reservoir of mountain snowpack, which melts gradually over the spring and summer. While it is well known that much of the West relies on snowpack for water storage, the vital role of snowpack in flood control is considerably less appreciated. When precipitation falls as snow, it stays in the mountains rather than flowing into reservoirs. This leaves more room in reservoirs to prevent flooding downstream during heavy rainfall.
The recent drought has highlighted the pressure that a changing climate puts on a snowpack-dependent water system. With the shift toward more rain rather than snow, and the earlier melting of the snowpack, water managers need to release water more frequently for flood control. This dynamic is playing out in Oroville now, with the state’s water managers racing to empty water from the dam’s reservoir in advance of storms forecast to arrive Wednesday. Because these storms are relatively warm, they are likely to bring rain to the surrounding mountains, speeding the flow of water behind the dam.
The juxtaposition of five years of hot, dry conditions followed by more rain than reservoirs can store may seem incongruous. However, this is exactly what climate scientists have predicted for California since at least the 1980s [ http://www.slideshare.net/Revkin/endless-summer-living-with-the-greenhouse-effect ]: protracted periods of warm, dry conditions punctuated by intense wet spells, with more rain and less snow, causing both drought and floods. Recent work from my lab shows that in fact this pattern is already emerging [ http://www.pnas.org/content/112/13/3931.abstract ], with the conditions that create extremely warm dry years and extremely wet years both becoming more frequent [ http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/2/4/e1501344 ].
The other bitter reality is that this extremely wet winter will not wash away the drought. Depending where one looks, California lost out on one to three full years of precipitation from 2012 to 2016. That is a lot of water to make up in one year, and as of last week almost half of California was still in a state of drought [ http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/Home/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA ]. The moisture deficits that have accumulated during the drought have not been seen in our lifetimes. They have caused thousands of California residents to go without running water, resulted in groundwater contamination and permanent loss of aquifer storage capacity [ https://ca.water.usgs.gov/data/drought/ ], and have severely stressed tens of millions of trees [ http://www.pnas.org/content/113/2/E249.abstract ]. As a result, even after this wet year, rural communities, groundwater aquifers and forest ecosystems will still feel the effects of the drought.

President Donald Trump has a way with scandal. His biggest controversies are so huge, so ludicrously bamboozling, that they suck up much of the attention in the country. The smaller disputes facing his staff can therefore slip by unnoticed. In his three-week-old administration, perhaps no man has benefited from this more than Scott Pruitt, Trump’s nominee to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the current attorney general of Oklahoma.
In the past week, Scott Pruitt has gotten sued by his own state’s ACLU, defied oversight requests from Senate Democrats, and ridden roughshod on his own state’s public-records law. In any other administration, that level of dispute might have made the front page. Now, Democrats will be lucky to cram it into the back of a news cycle before the Senate votes on Pruitt’s nomination at the end of this week.
This is a lost opportunity for anyone who cares about environmental protection at the national level. The nomination of Betsy DeVos, a Republican donor [ http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/trailguide/la-na-trailguide-updates-betsy-devos-hearing-donations-1484703816-htmlstory.html ] who appeared not to know about basic federal education law [ http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2017/01/18/six-astonishing-things-betsy-devos-said-and-refused-to-say-at-her-confirmation-hearing/ ], led to constituents clogging Senate switchboards. But the EPA wields much more power over air and water pollution than the Department of Education does over schools. And unlike DeVos, Pruitt is a tireless and knowledgable advocate for his cause of cutting environmental protections. He knows the statutes that govern the EPA, and (like the Obama administration) he knows how to interpret them to bring about his policy ends.

Hate groups increase for second consecutive year as Trump electrifies radical right
The number of hate groups in the United States rose for a second year in a row in 2016 as the radical right was energized by the candidacy of Donald Trump, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) annual census of hate groups [ https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map ] and other extremist organizations, released today.

The most dramatic growth was the near-tripling of anti-Muslim hate groups [ https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/anti-muslim ] – from 34 in 2015 to 101 last year.
The growth has been accompanied by a rash of crimes targeting Muslims, including an arson that destroyed a mosque in Victoria, Texas, just hours after the Trump administration announced an executive order suspending travel from some predominantly Muslim countries. The latest FBI statistics show that hate crimes against Muslims grew by 67 percent in 2015 [ https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2016/11/14/anti-muslim-hate-crimes-surged-last-year-fueled-hateful-campaign ], the year in which Trump launched his campaign.
The report [ https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/2017/year-hate-and-extremism ], contained in the Spring 2017 issue of the SPLC’s Intelligence Report, includes the Hate Map [ https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map ] showing the names, types and locations of hate groups across the country.
The SPLC found that the number of hate groups operating in 2016 rose to 917 – up from 892 in 2015. The number is 101 shy of the all-time record set in 2011, but high by historic standards.
“2016 was an unprecedented year for hate,” said Mark Potok, senior fellow and editor of the Intelligence Report. “The country saw a resurgence of white nationalism that imperils the racial progress we’ve made, along with the rise of a president whose policies reflect the values of white nationalists. In Steve Bannon, these extremists think they finally have an ally who has the president's ear.”
The increase in anti-Muslim hate was fueled by Trump’s incendiary rhetoric, including his campaign pledge to bar Muslims from entering the United States, as well as anger over terrorist attacks such as the June massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando.
The overall number of hate groups likely understates the real level of organized hatred in America as a growing number of extremists operate mainly online and are not formally affiliated with hate groups.
Aside from its annual census of extremist groups, the SPLC found that Trump’s rhetoric reverberated across the nation in other ways. In the first 10 days after his election, the SPLC documented 867 bias-related incidents, including more than 300 that targeted immigrants or Muslims.
Also, in a post-election SPLC survey of 10,000 educators, 90 percent said the climate at their schools had been negatively affected by the campaign. Eighty percent described heightened anxiety and fear among students, particularly immigrants, Muslims and African Americans. Numerous teachers reported the use of slurs, derogatory language and extremist symbols in their classrooms.

‘Real News’ Joins the White House Briefing Room

Among the herd of reporters filing past an oil portrait of Hillary Clinton in the vaulted Center Hall of the White House on Monday afternoon walked Jim Hoft, publisher of the Gateway Pundit, a conservative blog founded at the outset of George W. Bush’s second term.
It was a banner moment for the decade-old website, known for reporting obvious hoaxes as legitimate news and headlines such as: “EXPOSED=>HILLARY HITMAN Breaks Silence” and “Dental Expert: Hillary Clinton Is Suffering From Serious Gum Infection” and “One Week After Election Loss Hillary Clinton Looks Like Death.”
Hoft was on his way to his first White House news conference in the company of self-described “brand strategist” Lucian Wintrich, the Gateway Pundit’s inaugural White House correspondent, who for his first day on the job wore a blue tie studded with elephants in every color of the rainbow to announce his gay Republican pride.
Briefly disoriented upon entering the majestic East Room, the pair soon located the gold-painted chairs that had been reserved for them and settled in for President Donald Trump’s joint appearance with the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.
Gateway Pundit’s mission in expanding the website’s White House coverage is, according to Wintrich — a 2012 Bard College graduate with ruffled hair and tortoise-rimmed glasses who could pass for a precociously dressed high school student —“to help drain the press swamp” by covering the press corps’ “very leftist and biased reporting.” Their arrival, at the invitation of Trump’s team, represents the latest in the tug of war between the administration and the mainstream media for control of The Narrative.
All administrations play politics with media access. Barack Obama circumvented the media filter by granting sit-downs to YouTube stars, and, at one infamous 2005 news conference, George W. Bush called on a sycophantic conservative blogger who, it was later revealed, worked as a male prostitute before being given a White House press pass.
But none of that matches the early efforts of the Trump administration, which has labeled the media “the opposition party” in a struggle to define the nature of reality itself.
To that end, the Trump team has gotten to work quickly, stacking its briefings in its favor. In its first week in the White House, Trump’s communications team installed screens in the briefing room to allow journalists outside Washington — including conservative talk radio hosts — to participate. Sean Spicer — the White House press secretary who has achieved a perverse form of celebrity in the form of a brutal impersonation on “Saturday Night Live” — has also taken to calling on pro-Trump news outlets in an apparent attempt to deflect hard questions.
On Friday, at a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump called only on outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch, who has aggressively courted the new president and whose flagship newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, is being roiled by the discontent of reporters who feel it has been too soft on Trump (at a staff meeting on Monday, the paper’s editor dismissed such concerns as “fake news”).
On Monday, in the minutes before Trump and Trudeau appeared, a correspondent for One America News, a fledgling network that has emerged as a consistent Trump cheerleader to the nationalist right of Fox News, stood for a live shot at the front of the East Room next to Fox’s John Roberts and CNN’s Sara Murray.
During the news conference, the only questions from American outlets went to the right-leaning Daily Caller and to Sinclair Broadcasting Network’s WJLA, which reportedly struck a deal with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, during the campaign to gain more access to Trump in exchange for less-critical coverage. Both reporters conspicuously avoided asking Trump about the hottest story of the day: the status of embattled national security adviser Michael Flynn, who resigned hours later over revelations he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

An influential science advisory group formed by the National Academy of Sciences [ http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/national_academy_of_sciences/index.html ] and the National Academy of Medicine on Tuesday lent its support to a once-unthinkable proposition: the modification of human embryos to create genetic traits that can be passed down to future generations.
This type of human gene editing has long been seen as an ethical minefield. Researchers fear that the techniques used to prevent genetic diseases might also be used to enhance intelligence, for example, or to create people physically suited to particular tasks, like serving as soldiers.
The advisory group endorsed only alterations designed to prevent babies from acquiring genes known to cause “serious diseases and disability,” and only when there is no “reasonable alternative.” The report provides an explicit rationale for genetic research that the federal government has avoided supporting until now, although the work is being pursued in countries like Sweden and China.

Harvard and M.I.T. Scientists Win Gene-Editing Patent Fight

The Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., will retain potentially lucrative rights to a powerful gene-editing technique that could lead to major advances in medicine and agriculture, the federal Patent and Trademark Office ruled on Wednesday.
The decision, in a bitterly fought dispute closely watched by scientists and the biotechnology industry, was a blow to the University of California, often said to be the birthplace of the technique, which is known as Crispr-Cas9.
An appeals board of the patent office ruled that the gene-editing inventions claimed by the two institutions were separate and do not overlap.
The result is that the Broad Institute, a research center affiliated with M.I.T. and Harvard, gets to retain more than a dozen patents it has already been granted on the use of the Crispr technique to modify DNA in the cells of humans, animals and plants.
“It seems to be a decisive victory for the Broad Institute,” said Jacob S. Sherkow, an associate professor at New York Law School who has followed the case closely.
The Broad Institute, in a statement, said it agreed with the decision. Officials at the University of California said they were considering an appeal, although they noted the ruling left the door open for the university to obtain its own patents covering the use of Crispr for all types of cells.
“They have a patent on green tennis balls; we will have a patent on all tennis balls,” Jennifer Doudna, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said in a phone call with reporters. She has been widely credited as an inventor of the gene-editing technique.
Ultimately, companies wanting to apply Crispr for use in medicine, agriculture or other fields might need licenses from both the Broad Institute and the University of California, a lawyer for the university said. However, Professor Sherkow said he was doubtful that the university could obtain a broad patent, given the wording of Wednesday’s decision.
Crispr has generated excitement among biologists because the technique makes it relatively simple to change particular letters in an organism’s DNA, much like using word processing software to search for particular words and then deleting or replacing them.
That could allow for the development of new disease treatments that would fix defective genes in the human body. Crispr could also make it more practical to alter the DNA of human embryos, making changes that could be passed to future generations.

If Crispr lives up to its promise, the patents on the technique could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, or even more. However, related techniques, such as gene therapy and RNA interference, have also been described as having great promise and have resulted in few or no medical treatments so far.
Several companies are trying to develop medical treatments using Crispr, although they are in the early stage of development.

The addition of the incendiary right-wing writer Milo Yiannopoulos to Friday’s lineup for the HBO late-night series “Real Time With Bill Maher [ http://www.hbo.com/real-time-with-bill-maher ]” quickly proved controversial on Wednesday evening when another guest, the journalist Jeremy Scahill, said he would not appear on the show because of Mr. Yiannopoulos’s booking.
Mr. Scahill, a co-founder and editor of the news site The Intercept, announced his decision on Twitter [ https://twitter.com/jeremyscahill/status/832011012018728960 ] only hours after Mr. Yiannopoulos’s scheduled appearance was made public. Mr. Scahill said that allowing Mr. Yiannopoulos to appear on “Real Time” was “many bridges too far.”
“He has ample venues to spew his hateful diatribes,” Mr. Scahill said in a statement. “There is no value in ‘debating’ him. Appearing on ‘Real Time’ will provide Yiannopoulos with a large, important platform to openly advocate his racist, anti-immigrant campaign. It will be exploited by Yiannopoulos in an attempt to legitimize his hateful agenda.”

‘This is really unprecedented’: ICE detains woman seeking domestic abuse protection at Texas courthouse

A hearing in El Paso County in Texas went from ordinary to “unprecedented” last week when half a dozen Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents showed up at a courthouse where an undocumented woman was seeking a protective order against the boyfriend she accused of abusing her.
The woman, a citizen of Mexico who was living in El Paso had been driven to the courthouse by a victim’s advocate from the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence, a shelter for victims of domestic abuse where she had been living.
She left under arrest.
“This is really unprecedented,” El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal told The Washington Post.
It was the first time in her 23 years at the courthouse, Bernal said, that she can remember ICE agents making their presence known during a protective order hearing. The agents had come to stake out the woman, identified by her initials I.E.G., because, Bernal speculates, they likely received a tip from the only other person who knew the time and place of the hearing — the woman’s alleged abuser.

(JTA) — A South Carolina man who ranted against Jews was arrested for buying a gun for a shooting “in the spirit of” a white supremacist who killed nine at a black church, according to a federal complaint.
Benjamin Thomas Samuel McDowell, a former convict with connections to white supremacists, was arrested Wednesday after he bought a handgun from an undercover FBI agent, the New York Daily News reported [ http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/s-man-allegedly-planned-attack-temple-dylann-roof-article-1.2974465 ].
McDowell, 29, allegedly told the agent that he was inspired by Dylann Roof, who was sentenced to death last month for the killings at the Charleston church in 2015, and that he wanted to commit a “big scale” attack and write on the wall of the building “In the spirit of Dylann Roof.”
McDowell had not decided on the location for his intended attack, according to the complaint, but had shared on his Facebook a link to a local synagogue, Temple Emanu-El in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with the message “I love love to act what u think.”
He also seemed to claim that Jews were out to kill white people, writing on his Facebook page, “All they wanne do is stay loaded on drugs the Jews put here to destory white man and they fest on the drugs (sic),” according to the complaint.

Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn denied to FBI agents in an interview last month that he had discussed U.S. sanctions against Russia with that country’s ambassador to the United States before President Trump took office, contradicting the contents of intercepted communications collected by intelligence agencies, current and former U.S. officials said.
The Jan. 24 interview potentially puts Flynn in legal jeopardy, as lying to the FBI is a felony, but any decision to prosecute would ultimately lie with the Justice Department. Some officials said bringing a case could prove difficult in part because Flynn may attempt to parse the definition of sanctions.
A spokesman for Flynn said he had no response. The FBI declined to comment.
