CENTENNIAL, Colo., Dec 19, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- OPS - OnLine Power Supply, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: OPWR), has received notice of allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a patent entitled "Power Factor Controller." This patent (6,493,242 B1) was issued on December 10, 2002 and is a "divisional" of a prior patent entitled "Individual or Distributed Non-Saturating Magnetic Element Power Converter" (6,272,025).
The new patent covers improvements in converter strategies, circuit design, apparatus, and processes that enable OPS to produce AC/DC power supplies with ultra-high efficiencies that do not thermally derate. These combined improvements translate into higher system efficiencies, higher power densities, lower operating temperatures, and improved thermal tolerance, which reduce or even eliminate the need for forced air cooling.
Additional advancements covered by the patent state that the non- saturating magnetic properties are relatively insensitive to temperature and allow the converter to operate over a greater temperature range. This makes the Company's power supplies ideal solutions for harsh environment applications. The patent is the second for OPS.
"We have robust products that provide critical advantages for our leading- edge customers," said Glenn Grunewald, CEO of OPS. "With the addition of our second patent, we're well positioned in preserving and protecting the competitive advantages that set us apart from competing products."
OPS holds two U.S. patents for the process of producing AC to DC power supplies that provide efficiencies of up to 97 percent, extended operating temperature ranges and unparalleled power densities, all without thermal derating. This innovation is called Distributed Power Magnetics (DPM) and is the first significant breakthrough in AC to DC power supply technology in over 23 years. Online Power Supply Announces Release of New 48-Volt, 1,000-Watt Power Supply That is Dramatically Smaller, Lighter and More Efficient Than the Competition
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Dec 11, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- OnLine Power Supply,
Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: OPWR), announced today the release of its
revolutionary new isolated 48-volt AC to DC power supply.
Prototypes for evaluation of the 1,000-watt power supply are being shipped to
original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who have expressed continued interest
in the new product during the design and testing phase.
The release marks a milestone for OnLine Power Supply, which has been developing
and testing the 48 Vdc power supply -- the first in a family of new OPS products
-- for three years.
"This may be the most important event in our company's history. All of our
research, discovery, hard work and persistence is paying off," said OPS CEO Kris
Budinger. "We're excited to start production and get power supplies into our
customers' hands so they can create new generations of smaller, more powerful,
more efficient products."
The 48 Vdc power supply incorporates OPS' sophisticated new Distributed Power
Magnetics(TM) (DPM) technology, the first significant breakthrough in power
supply development in 23 years. This patented/patent pending technology results
in AC to DC power supplies that are dramatically smaller, lighter, cooler and
more efficient than anything else in this niche. DPM also provides superior MTBF
(mean time between failure) statistics. Marketing is geared toward the top 50
electronics and telecommunications companies in North America and work is under
way with OEMs to secure long-term design-in business for the 48 Vdc power
supply.
"An OEM that can reduce the costs of heating, ventilation and air conditioning,
the costs of maintenance, and the costs of real estate, ultimately creates value
for the customer. Consequently, a power supply meeting all of these
specifications (efficiency, availability, volume, and weight) would clearly
attract the attention of most any OEM," said Andrew Huang, Power Electronics
Research Analyst at CIBC World Markets Corp. "The real beneficiary of this
product will be the data center manager, whose primary concern is total cost of
ownership."
The new unit provides packaged power efficiency of about 91 percent, meaning
only 9 percent of the energy created is lost through heat dissipation. This is a
dramatic improvement over the current industry standard of 75 to 85 percent
efficiency.
The 48 Vdc power supply is .99 power factor corrected and provides a packaged
power density of 15 watts per cubic inch, giving design engineers more power in
a box one-third the size of competitors' models. It also provides a significant
weight reduction, compared to competitors' products. The 1,000-watt OPS 48 Vdc
power supply weighs less than 3 pounds, while competitors' 500-watt units weigh
between 4 and 6 pounds.
"A manufacturer can fit three of our power supplies in the same space it
currently takes for just one of the competition's products," said OPS' Steve
Watt, 48-Volt Project Manager. "Using our product, system designers will have
two to three times more power in the same footprint. This frees up room for more
components, or allows for a smaller overall product."
To understand the significance of this new power supply, think about a server,
the device that operates the computer networks at most large companies. Inside
the server case are: a power supply, circuit board, processors, memory, hard
drives, CD drives, and cards for video, sound and graphics, etc. Each of these
components generates heat and must be kept within a specific operating
temperature, usually assisted by a cooling fan. If it gets too hot inside the
server case, the system will malfunction or shut down.
Over the last 36 years, technology has generally kept pace with Moore's law,
which says that processor speed doubles every 18 months. Microprocessors, memory
chips, device cards and other components have all advanced at this rapid pace,
and with increased performance has come increased heat.
Until now, power supply technology hasn't kept pace with Moore's law. OPS' 48
Vdc power supply represents a quantum leap that puts power supplies on pace with
the rapid developments in the rest of the electronics industry. Looking back at
the server example, OPS' DPM technology allows designers to add more power to
the system in less space. And unlike others, OPS' power supplies generate added
heat in a smaller proportion to the increase in power. That means designers can
add more user-friendly features and components without exceeding the thermal
budget (the system's cumulative operating temperature). The end result is a
smaller, faster, cooler, more powerful server.
"The customer is going to appreciate the enhanced capabilities our products
offer without cost penalties. They solve real world problems in a cost-effective
manner," said Chris Riggio, OPS' Vice President of Discovery.
Servers are just one example of the applications for this new power supply. This
breakthrough power supply could provide real solutions and advances in products
for the telecommunications and data storage industries, as well as in ATMs and a
host of other high-tech products.
"Elements of this product such as power density, efficiency, size, simplicity
and MTBF lend themselves to reliability," Riggio said. "It's a tremendous cost
benefit because the customer doesn't have to spend as much to cool things."
Dick Doyle, P.E., of Doyle and Associates in La Jolla, Calif., said OPS' 48 Vdc
power supply offers several advantages over the competition.
"This is new technology to the power industry. It's the latest and greatest in
terms of temperature and speed of switching," said Doyle, who has evaluated
power supplies from 10 to 20 manufacturers over the last 15 years.
"Specifically, the technology that's incorporated allows the system to provide
reliable power over a wide range of voltages and loads at high temperatures. And
it provides high efficiency with consequently low energy dissipation."
The OPS engineering team has been testing the 48 Vdc power supply in preparation
for UL certification. Pre-production work at the manufacturing plant will begin
in the coming weeks.
OnLine Power Supply holds a U.S. patent for the process of producing AC to DC
power supplies that provide efficiencies of up to 97 percent, power densities of
more than 16 watts per cubic inch, operating temperature ranges of -40 to +85
Celsius, all with no thermal deration. This technology is called Distributed
Power Magnetics(TM) (DPM) and is the first significant breakthrough in power
supply in over 23 years. The sophisticated DPM products also operate without
cooling fans or extraneous heat sinks and boast impressive MTBF statistics, all
in the lightest and smallest footprint available for their particular
configurations. Benefited industries include telecommunications, data
communications, networking and industrial. For additional information, visit

Online Power Supply Announces Shareholder Rights Plan
DENVER, Apr 25, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- OnLine Power Supply, Inc. (OTC
Bulletin Board: OPWR) today announced that its Board of Directors has adopted a
Shareholder Rights Plan under which OnLine Power shareholders will receive
preferred stock purchase rights to protect them in the event of an unfair
takeover attempt.
Kris Budinger, president and CEO, said the move was designed to discourage a
hostile takeover bid during a period when the value of OnLine Power's publicly
traded stock does not accurately reflect the company's technology base and
prospects for growth and profitability.
"This Rights Agreement, which is similar to rights agreements being implemented
by public companies throughout the United States, ensures that OnLine Power and
its shareholders will be protected from abusive takeover tactics geared toward
paying less than fair market value," Budinger said. "With this plan in place,
OnLine Power's shareholders are assured that any individual or organization
seeking control of the company will have to meet and bargain in good faith with
the company's Board of Directors. This way, the Board can ensure that any
proposed acquisition of OnLine Power would be at a price that is in the best
interests of shareholders."
Budinger said the Rights are automatically triggered upon the declared intent to
purchase, or the actual purchase, by a third party of a 15% or greater
beneficial ownership of the company's voting stock. Once triggered, shareholders
of common stock would be able to essentially double their holdings at a price
that is approximately one-half of the then current market price of the stock.
Conversely, in the event of a legitimate offer to purchase all of the
outstanding shares of OnLine Power, the Board of Directors is authorized to
redeem the Rights, clearing the way for such an acquisition.
Under the Shareholder Rights Plan, no action on the part of OnLine Power
shareholders is required. Rather, shareholders of record as of April 25, 2001,
automatically qualify for the rights by virtue of their stock ownership. In
addition, such rights would attach to all future owners of common stock.
Investors seeking detailed information on the Shareholder Rights Plan are
encouraged to review Form 8-A, which was filed with the Securities and Exchange
Commission on April 25, 2001, and which is accessible via the SEC's public

OnLine Power Supply Completes Safety and Reliability Testing for PFC Module
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Mar 27, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- OnLine Power Supply,
Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: OPWR) today announced it has completed safety and
reliability testing for its OPS-500-385 PFC Module, clearing the way to
commencing commercialization of its new product.
Kris Budinger, CEO of OnLine Power, said the Company successfully completed its
HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing) ruggedization testing, which is a
state-of-the-art testing process used to uncover design and production process
flaws. The HALT testing, performed by QualMark Corporation, allows manufacturers
to identify and correct potential quality issues early in the design and
production cycle in order to avoid costly recalls and redesigns after the
product has been deployed in the field.
Budinger said management was pleased with the product's HALT results. "Our PFC
Module was still operational at -90 Degrees C and +130 Degrees C," said
Budinger. "The unit maintained its operating conditions under 30G's of vibration
across three axes. These are not normal operating conditions since the units are
safeguarded to more conservative operating conditions." Budinger added that
operating specifications and the HALT report are available to customer level
engineers.
The Company's unique, patent-pending PFC Module converts AC power to DC power
suitable for use in sensitive electronics applications. The Company believes the
product is the smallest, lightest, most efficient power supply in its industry
representing the first appreciable technological advancement in the last 20
years.
"HALT testing is designed to stress electronic products to extreme outside
specified operating ranges until it reaches the point of failure to determine
their absolute operating and destruct limits," said Budinger. "Our HALT testing
results support our own data which shows the PFC Module is capable of operating
extremely efficiently in harsh environments common to the wireless industry as
well as other markets we are targeting."
Budinger also reported the Company has received a Notice of Authorization to
apply the UL and C-UL recognition marks to its OPS-500-385 PFC Module in the
U.S. and Canada. The UL mark on a product means that UL has tested and evaluated
representative samples of that product and determined that they meet UL's
requirements for use in the United States. The C-UL mark is applied to products
for the Canadian market. The products with the C-UL mark have been evaluated to
Canadian safety requirements, which may be somewhat different from U.S. safety
requirements.
"Completion of the safety and reliability tests was the final hurdle for OnLine
Power in its transition from research and development phase to commercial
production mode," Budinger said. He noted that OnLine Power has shipped units to
customers and potential customers for use in testing and that feedback on the
product's performance has been excellent.

Online Power Supply's Breakthrough Technology Yields Smallest, Lightest,
Most Efficient Power Supplies
Units Available for Industry Review and Testing November 6
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Oct 30, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- OnLine Power Supply,
Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: OPWR) has introduced a significant advancement in
power supply technology for AC to DC applications. The company's new Power
Factor Corrected Front End Module is the smallest, lightest, most reliable, most
efficient power supply with no thermal deration currently available. The units,
which have been in development for the past three years, are available for
review and testing beginning November 6.
OnLine Power Supply, headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, develops,
manufactures and markets AC to DC power conversion supplies for
telecommunications, data communications, networking and industrial applications.
The new power supply units allow design engineers the freedom to redesign and
reconfigure a wide range of equipment. They are over 97% efficient, the only
units available that include the EMI filter and hold-up capacitors internally.
Therefore they offer more power in a smaller form factor. This is a powerful
advantage for manufacturers, allowing them to decrease the size and increase the
performance of their equipment for end users.
The units' smaller size and lighter weight -- the units measure 2.9" x 1.6" x
5.7" and weigh less than two pounds -- mean they can supply more power than
traditional units in a more compact space. The units generate less heat,
eliminating the need for bulky cooling fans. These are important advantages in
the communications and networking industries where reducing equipment size and
footprint are high priorities.
The units' reliability and ability to function well in harsh environments
increase their potential applications. They function at full power in
temperatures ranging from -40 degrees to +85 degrees C, making them ideal for
placement in outdoor equipment like communications towers and cell sites. They
offer universal input so they can be used anywhere in the world.
OnLine's new units offer manufacturers a cost advantage in addition to design
flexibility. They supply more power per unit, thus lowering overall system costs
and increasing profitability.
"Our new power supply has the potential to change the industry," said Kris
Budinger, OnLine Power Supply president and CEO. "We've been told that our specs
are unbelievable, that it can't be done. So we are offering design engineers a
