While I don't totally disagree with you, these drugs are the same as heroin. They are addictive opiates that are passed out by Dr's (at the urging of LARGE pharmaceutical companies that basically own the FDA) at alarming rates.
We shouldn't be limited from making decisions, but we shouldn't have corporations essentially making them for us either. We trust our doctors. Most will do exactly what they are told.

I have had two surgeries in the past 30 mos. I was prescribed opiates both times and urged by doctors, nurses and what seemed like everyone involved to load up on them. My wife was instructed to fill the script on the way home, and to make sure I took them.

I got by just fine with ibuprofen and my Actipatch. I have posted pictures proving Actipatch worked to help me heal. Something an opiate CANNOT do.
