As I have said before, the only value that a patent has in the cost - in enginnering, product, and time to market - to design around it. The only limit - except those mentioned above - is making the end product so expensive as to limit the size of the end market. Of course, that is Nokia's argument, that patents are becoming so expensive as to limit the market. But we all know that such statements are just self serving to get lower costs.

There is another self-imposed limit: I understand from others that to get a technical approach accepted into the standards, IPR holders had to agree to license to all comers for a "fair and reasonable" fee. Whatever that is.
