Barge: A highly energetic post...
Some issues surrounding Wave require speculation and imagination and dot-connecting. This is not one of them.
Just a few minor things to consider:
** As I understand it, XBOX--apparently carrying a modified, non-TCG compliant TPM from Infineon--launches THIS YEAR.
** Microsoft VISTA which relies in part on the 1.2 TPM will launch--unless, of course, it's delayed for the third time--by end of NEXT YEAR.
** Therefore, XBOX, in its current form at least, will be launching without having to interoperate with VISTA and will NOT be dependent on communicating with and/or sharing files with a 1.2-enabled PC.
** Obviously, Microsoft's XBOX (at least, this year's version) is not relying on a base of TPM-enabled PCs at all. Why? Because there is no such base in the CONSUMER realm. Microsoft is not stupid. They will not be requiring folks to go out an buy a new TPM-enabled PC to support their newly purchased XBOX.
** To further bolster the last point: Infineon is making the modified TPM. Thus far, Infineon has offered no software to enable interoperability between its TPMs and TPMs from other companies. Unless Infineon is pulling a rabbit out of its hat, it's pretty obvious that XBOX will not be drawing upon the capabilities of TPMs in PCs... Because not even Microsoft would be arrogant enough to ask consumers that after they purchase their new XBOX that they also buy a new PC with a TPM manufactured by Infineon.
** So where does this leave us? An XBOX will (apparently) have a modified type of TPM and, when it comes to file transfers, will NOT depend on PCs with TPMs. And if XBOX doesn't depend on PCs with TPMs, then Wave's role in this little drama is... well... tiny or NON-EXISTENT.
Barge, it is good to be looking for D-Day. (Although, I'm not sure you'd like to be the first off any of those amphibious vessels.) But, D-Day will not be found in XBOX land this year... unless, of course, there's a video game version.
