Dude Danny--The XBOX = Trusted Platform Module. Of course a few folks on this board violently twisted the context of an earlier S. Sprague e-mail(see below). S. Sprague is NOT questioning whether the Xbox will have a the TPM embedded inside, but whether the Xbox TPM will be compliant with the Trusted Computing Group. S. Sprague addresses this question by stating that he did not believe the TPM was compliant. But that the lack of compliance was no big deal because it would be "EASY to create a binding on the network between my PC and my Xbox....." This reply certainly suggests that only a few tweaks are necessary to make Xbox compliant with the TCG.

IN ADDITION, common sense dictates that it would be somewhat absurd for MS to deploy Xboxs with TPMs which were non-compliant to TCG, which in effect would mean that XBox would not be compliant with Longhorn OS(which requires TCG compliance via the TPM 1.2)).

WILL D-DAY FOR ACTIVATED TPMS HAPPEN ON THE ENTERPRISE OR THE CONSUMER BEACHHEADS?

It has been my (very contrarian) opinion for quite some time now that if we wait for the enterprise sector to kick into high gear the WAVE SLOG will continue and continue! Enterprises will tread slowly and cautiously with the introduction of TPMs. Enterprises will typically want to work with a few sample groups before activating Trusted Computing to the whole company.

This board is looking at the Wrong Beachfront! This board sees a few battleships waddling towards the Enterprise Beachfront, and therefore nearly everyone grips tightly their little plastic binoculars fixated on the Enterprise shoreline. Meanwhile a half dozen MASSIVE FLOTILLAS that go by such names as XBOX, INTEL'S VIIV, MICROSOFT WINDOW MEDIA CENTER 2005, GATEWAY(with basic TPM consumer utilities) are slowly moving out of port scheduled to massively blitz the Consumer Beachheads by Christmas of this Year!! And no one appears to notice because they're so damn obsessed with the Enterprise sector.

Here we are in Sept and we have YET heard of ANY ENTERPRISE that has embraced and begun to activate the TPMs! I think it is safe to say that at least a few dozen enterprises are activating TPMs, but I think it is also safe that those Enterprises are moving slowly and cautiously, and that they are hampered by the lack of Trusted Applications. The Enterprise Sector is moving, but isn't it obvious that the movement continues to move at the speed of thick molasses syrup? Yes, no doubt about it!!! TPMs deployment are moving forward at an accelerated pace; but, I'm speaking of ACTIVATION of those TPMs in large numbers. And that does not appear to be happening.

On the other hand, XBOX(which will require an Interoperable TPM solution) is expected to sell how many millions of units with millions of applications once launched this Nov. And to use Xbox-360 you've going to need to ACTIVATE the TPMs or you won't be able to gain access to premium content!

Not many bought into my insistence since early 2005, that the XBOX-360 specs cried out TPMs. And not many are going to buy into my belief that the Enterprise beachhead is NOT where the real action will occur when Trusted Computing is launched in a massive and global manner. We shall see. IMO, COMMON SENSE DICTATES IT WILL HAPPEN ON THE CONSUMER SIDE!!! Otherwise, the Slog, is going to continue on much longer than many on this board are willing to believe or accept.

Wave response on Infineon TPM in XBox...

"This is a custom chip and not a TPM compliant chip as I understand it. However based on the spec below (see theregister.com article) it should be easy to create a binding on the network between my PC and my Xbox. We support all design wins for hardware security this is a good thing. Our goal is to compete well with infineon’s software group not infineon in general. The more security hardware in the world the better it is for Wave."

Infineon's TPM 1.2 chip supports the Trusted Computing Group's trusted platform 1.2 specification, but it also delivers a variety of security features, including ACE with RSA support for 2048-bit keys, hardware acceleration for SHA-1 hashing, true random number generation- useful, we'd suggest, for gameplay as much as it is for security...
