MY COMMENT:IDCC management had enough foresight to sue for Billions of Euros as opposed to Billions of Dollars and make hundreds of Millions of Dollars extra with a favorable exchange rate!

Ericsson faces patent challenge

February 11, 2003

SWEDISH telecommunications giant Ericsson is being sued for billions of euros in a patent infringement case brought by US company Interdigital, the business daily Dagens Industri (DI) reported.

Interdigital, a maker of electronic components, is accusing Ericsson of allegedly infringing eight of its patents, and looking for damages totalling 20 to 40 billion kronor ($A3.9 billion to $A7.9 billion), according to US media quoted by DI.

Ericsson is fighting back and has asked the courts to cancel Interdigital's patents, arguing that the technology concrened was already known and covered by previous patents, the newspaper said.

All of the patents in question concern Time Division Multiple Access (TDAM) technology, which greatly enhances mobile phone carrier capabilities compared with analogue systems.

The hearings were originally to open in Texas on Monday, but have been postponed to May 15.
