jimmybob, were you using TD Ameritrade as your brokerage for this LNKD options trade? If so, you can inform them to flag your account with an instruction to never exercise your in-the-money options upon expiration. This will prevent the brokerage from closing out your positions without your consent. I've added this stipulation to my account a few weeks ago.
