"Harris v. Ericsson"
11/14/2002 , The Recorder

Harris Corp. has won a $61 million judgment against Ericsson Inc. in a patent infringement suit involving cellular telephone technology. A federal jury decided that Ericsson willfully infringed a patent on a method for equalizing radio transmission signals to eliminate distortion and make them perceivable over a cellular phone. The technology was developed 20 years ago by Harris for the military and was licensed by several other companies. Ericsson refused to license the technology and was sued by Harris. The court found that the infringement by Ericsson was willful and increased the damages award up to triple the amount and ordered the company to pay attorney’s fees also. “The verdict validates the fundamental work that Harris did and still does in the communications area,” said Henry Bunsow (SF), a partner at Howrey Simon Arnold & White and lead counsel for Harris. The Howrey team on the case included partners Alan Fisch (DC), Teresa Corbin (Menlo Park) and Jennifer Sklenar (LA), and associates Jason Hoffman (DC), Matthew Hocker (Menlo Park), Jayna Whitt (Menlo Park) and Heather Fan (Menlo Park).
