#40183 RE: lbdave #40182

Interesting information, and that from Hockmir earlier also. I will have to pull up the schematic I have from his modification. I know that there were a couple things on it I had to question, which turned out to be simply excess, redundant paths, but it was basically very simple change. I have wondered why, if it was so effective, and if everyone is so much after energy conservation, outlawing incandescents etc., then why isn't the modification standard.
From what I hear you saying, it is not really so much a savings of energy consumed as it is one of changing where it is consumed (at the motor instead of loss along the line) and the modification can only be done in context (line length).
The modification was experimental in the sense that he had tried various capacitances measuring the result with each as opposed to calculating a theoretical need based on the motor. The circuit is a normal 110 motor, not sure but probably a 1/2 horse two-speed commodity motor and I think he ended up with a capacitance in the couple farad range.
Your comment is encouraging me to put aside my skepticism and to pull out that schematic and see about making the modification when I revamp this spring during the annual major maintenance on my unit here.
