Good Comeback es1
But the next thing mojo or some other less positive persona will say is "but we already have nylon so we don't need anything better", and then some more positive persona will say " so and so wanted to close the patent office in 18xx because he knew that everything we needed was already invented". You guys can keep going around this circular argument for at least another two weeks, and then six months from now a seemingly new poster can say "how about what that guy said back in September, that no one would want to make stronger stockings because then no one would buy a second pair?"
What I tried to say very clearly yesterday was that strength and durability was NOT THE ISSUE!
Sure someone can use spider silk to make unbreakable underoos but that same someone could make 10 year stockings from nylon or even cotton. All they need to do is to make them thicker and uglier.
My point was that an intelligent manufacturer does not use the same thickness, weight and weave of a stronger material to make more durable stockings, they make them thinner and lighter and smoother so that the durability remains about the same but the quality and luxury are improved and the amount of material used is reduced.
Get over this iron-pants thing! Spider silk will be used for parachutes that can be contained in a pack half the size, For boats that will hold eight persons and be carried by a single man,
Tow ropes that fit in your glove compartment.
Rain and wind proof jackets that can be tucked into a small pocket.
Diaphanous lingerie, shiny slinky evening gowns, invisible tummy-flatteners, thinner fly fishing line so that twice the length can fit on the same reel and the fish can't see it, and a thousand other things that can be made BETTER by the new material, not necessarily stronger.
