nic.....being in the "top 3 or 4" in LTE patent (and patent application) declarations.... is very different from "holding the majority of essential patents"....which was what I was responding to in my original post.

Or maybe they are using the same marketing plan for 4G that they are using for 3G. Hence, they'll give them "six years" to come to the table and then sue them if not successful.

Nic,

IMHO, the "few signings" for 4G has more to do with actual finalization of the standard and the timetable for LTE units. Of course there are other external factors (disputes, litigation, patent auctions, etc.) at play that have some influence.

As new licenses sign or current 3G customers renew, it makes sense to include 4G into the new/renewal agreements. I don't think it makes sense to expect a ton of deals as we are looking at what? 3 to 4 years away for significant LTE shipments? In the meantime, there should be some 4G licenses signed/announced - but I still think we are on pace to see the bulk of them happening closer to the 2014 timetable.

As for Rox's comments on IDCC acquiring Nortel's patents, I never agreed because I detected some type of irony in his reply and I always believed IDCC (and other NPEs) were using this opportunity to either 1) get great patents for cheap or 2) increase awareness/value of their own patent portfolio(s).
