barge the microtransactions

Not to be perceived as lacking courage or conviction but truly MSFT intentions are unknown to me. However, how in the world are they going to pull off microtransactions. SKS has ALWAYS said gaming was a natural here... could this truly be the first iteration of the good things to come? Could we be seeing executive firmware introduced? The HD version should be out Fall of 2005 with the third XBOX-2 iteration due out next year (a full blown PC version). My head hurts.. I just don't know BUT IT IS INTERESTING :-)

Xbox Store Seen Opening New Gaming Revenue Streams

By Ben Berkowitz

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - New car: $1. New helmet: 5 cents. Flashy new warrior's sword: 50 cents. Bigger baseball bat: three for $2. Magic spell to help defeat that tricky warlord on level five: 10 cents per use.

Welcome to the online store of the future -- the one embedded in your favorite video game.

When Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) releases the new version of its Xbox (news - web sites) video game console -- presumably this year -- it plans to include a storefront that will offer "microtransactions."

The idea is that everyone wins: players with disposable income can spend a few cents here and there to enhance their gameplay in most any way they like, and publishers get a way to create a continuing revenue stream.

C2

barge: xBox and TPM...

I know everybody is riding the TPM bandwagon but just let me assert that in order to do secure micro transactions, renting of games, preview of games etc. a TPM is not going to cut the cake. The TPM is valuable to store customer credentials and to issue keys.

What xBox needs to do all of the above is a secure execution environment! Maybe a secure card reader?

Will it have a secure execution environment? Possible!

PS: The description by Paul Thurott in cm's post:

http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=6024488

"...Essentially an online store for purchasing game add-ons, new game levels, maps, weapons, skins, and even community-created content, the Marketplace will feature game and genre searching.

Micro-transactions. This feature will let game makers charge small amounts of money for in-game services and features, such as new cars for a racing title or new weapons for a first person shooter..."

Re: XBOX 2 info

Hi Barge, Mr. Blight of Voyager Systems seems to aggree with your assessment of XBOX 2's security features. Check out pages 8-14, and page 86.
