WAG: Do you "suppose" that AMD is having difficulties with thier..... Ummmmmm..... I mean IBM's, 90nm Process's Yields/Binsplits? Maybe it's not the Measurement Tools, maybe it's just a crappy process.
So....according to Semi, there is some connection between AMD buying a metrology tool and IBM 90nm yields/binsplits. How curious? Such incredible insight. Well.....here is something that is far less curious and requires much less insight. The large over capacity that Intel has put in place is the direct result of past yield busts which allowed AMD to gain market share. Intel wants to be able to supply 85+% of the market even at much reduced yields. This also allows them to roll out the next process generation ahead of the competition even at at very low initial yields. Sort of an insurance policy. A very expensive one which costs Intel billions but keeps the myth alive.
