#40927 RE: wbmw #40926

Performance wise, I do agree that Intel is in a pretty deep hole, but I doubt that 64-bits will exacerbate the problem. After all, Nocona already has EM64T on it. When Microsoft comes out with 64-bit Windows, then Intel will enable EM64T on the desktop. Very simple.

I think the difference is in the instructions and not the memory
address issue. Though I'm one of those few that actually use
those instructions.

Microsoft appears to be have a lot of problems lately and one
of my coworkers is going to talk to a relative there to get an
idea as to what's happening. I have a few well-placed contacts
that I haven't used in a few years but I don't think it's a good
time to tap them.

BTW, are you keeping up with what's happening at HPQ and your
favorite OS?

The issue is that iAMD64 is rumored to "suck" performance-wise on Nocona. So it may exacerbate the problem considerably.

wbmw - Just because Intel "has" it and can enable it doesn't mean they'll get the same performance boost that AMD will. At this point, with what limited data we have, it looks likely that they won't get the same boost.

The question is will there be a chipset for Nocona, should it ever appear. I still haven't read a 64bit review yet and the smell of "Eau du stockyards" hangs heavy over the entire project.

Not trying to change the subject, but you guys are sounding just like the AMDers used to. I can still remember the days when all the AMD loyal could say was just wait until tomorrow. Having been on both sides I much prefer where AMD is now.

Intel has never made this linkage, so why are you? Sounds like the coverup for another Intel delay, in getting EM64T to actually work.

So far, I've not read any promises from Intel that its Prescott chips can have EM64T "enabled" at some future time. Are you saying that Intel will, IN WRITING, promise its customers that Prescott chips can have EM64T enabled when Windows 64 ships?

IMO, that can of worms is so big that even Intel won't attempt it. Prescott is a 32-bit chip PERIOD until Intel certifies one or more Prescott platforms (CPU+chipset+mobo design) to be "guaranteed to work on XP 64."
