wbmw - re: "Rated fairly against what? Celeron D megahertz?"
Try again. How about actual performance?

Price/Performance Analysis
In comparing the price/performance data between similarly priced Celerons and Semprons, we can see that the Semprons take down the Intel platform with ease. In most benchmarks, the Sempron processors outperform the Celeron 335, and since both flavors are cheaper than the slower Celeron, price/performance is obviously in favor of AMD here. This isn't even a contest.

WBMW:

What's going to happen is that people are going to be confused by this numbering system. They don't even pretend to back this up with any benchmaks. People will assume that Sempron 3100+ is faster than the Athlon 64 on the shelf next to it at 3000+. Funny how the AMD fans cried long and hard claiming Celeron devalued mhz and now this? Total hypocrisy...

But UPC(AKA DOUG:) says its fair.

Model numbers have become absolutely absurd. Especially when you compare it to Dothan. People may wrongly assume that 2200+ or even a sempron 3100+ is faster than a 2GHZ dothan. Of course since AMD has no money no one will bother to sue:)

Yes, of course Celeron D megahertz. I believe the Celeron clockspeed is still being marketed, despite the new Intel model system. I do agree it would be even better if they also copied the Intel model system, and indicated that as well. Maybe Intel would sue somehow? You know, something like this.

Sempron 2800+ (Cel-335)

Intel has finally gotten over that measurement, why can't AMD?

Intel may have gotten over, why can't their OEMs? I haven't seen one ad in a flyer, newspaper or placard in a store that doesn't give as much prominence to MHz as the chip's meaningless name.
