#40790 RE: Petz #40776

Petz, Re: Intel may have gotten over, why can't their OEMs? I haven't seen one ad in a flyer, newspaper or placard in a store that doesn't give as much prominence to MHz as the chip's meaningless name.

It took a while for AMD, and I guess it will take a while for Intel. Dell doesn't want some old fogey who wants to upgrade their 333MHz Celeron to be discouraged to buy the Celeron D 330. The performance market might have already moved into the gigahertz range, but old timers looking for a long overdue upgrade may not realize that Celeron D 330 is not 330MHz. Same goes for the other 3-digit model numbers, I would assume. That's why I think OEMs are going to keep megahertz as a "reality check" until consumers are familiar with seeing the model numbers.

Petz, on Celeron name

I haven't seen one ad in a flyer, newspaper or placard in a store that doesn't give as much prominence to MHz as the chip's meaningless name.

That should be "more prominence". How many times have you seen a "2.6 GHz Intel processor" advertised, without mentioning the cheapening word "Celeron"? And since when will they quote a 3xx model number, when everybody will want a 5xx or 7xx?
