Paul, negotiation time for Dell and INTEL
Well, it seems I will have to go up against popular opinion and clearly state that I fully expect Dell to start selling Opteron servers in the near future.
Comparisons to previous events are not valid, as the Kevin Rollins comments I posted underscored in a perfect way, imho.
The main thing is that this time, it´s about the core of Dell´s business, not some niche consumer models that only account for 15% of Dell´s business anyway.
Dell´s main competitors are coming out with 2-way, 4-way, 8-way servers, blade servers, workstations etc., unique products with unique qualities, and Dell will not just sit and watch and miss this opportunity. It´s a business decision, and Dell is doing business as usual, which means that as soon as the volume opportunity is there, they will be on board.
We´ll see how it turns out.
