first, have them moved into "safekeeping".. it's a brokerage term and he'll know what you're talking about.

In general, move them out of a margin account to a non-margin account.

If the shares are not in a margin account, they cannot (legally) be loaned out for shorting. However, make sure you read your account Ts & Cs for caveats.
