There is nothing new about Intel doing the co-engineering. They do it for everybody.

"Cray can't afford to pay for any co-engineering,..."

You are most certainly correct.

And you probably know why.

Cray's multi-year collaboration with AMD has resulted in Cray going nearly bankrupt.

Of course, they have company - AMD is essentially bankrupt as well.

I suppose we will now begin to hear the new MAS Mantra:

"HPC computing is worthless"
(Now that AMD is getting their butt bounced around)

mas,

Cray can't afford to pay for any co-engineering, Intel's paying for it lock stock and barrel. That is what is the no-brainer.

Nope. Intel is paying for it with money they took out of AMD's pockets.

BTW, I have heard around the net that AMD threatened Cray if they "even tried to talk to Intel". Sounds serious, if true ;)

"Now, we're not ones to go 'round spreadin' rumors,
Why, really we're just not the gossipy kind,
No, you'll never hear one of us repeating gossip,
So you'd better be sure and listen close the first time!"
