Cray can't afford to pay for any co-engineering, Intel's paying for it lock stock and barrel. That is what is the no-brainer.

Nope. Intel is paying for it with money they took out of AMD's pockets.

BTW, I have heard around the net that AMD threatened Cray if they "even tried to talk to Intel". Sounds serious, if true ;)
