smooth2o, you have got to be kidding! -

I2 was never meant for the Xeon market, think big iron...

Back when Intel and HP announced the project in 1994, Merced was suppose to have replaced x86 in both servers and desktops before now. Now, that isn't I2, but certainly was the intent for the EPIC architecture.

You don't have to go back very far to get speculations about how I2 was going to be ready for the Xeon market soon. Intel advocates have been arguing that on this board even a few months ago.

Intel just keeps changing their tune. AMD seems to be successfully kicking I2 upstairs. It becomes more and more of a niche product with each passing month.

smooth2o,

1. I2 was never meant for the Xeon market, think big iron...

You may actually be right about that. But Intel started the Itanium project at the time it was not entirely clear that the the high end stuff is disappearing, the market is being consumed by Xeon.

2. Granted, APX32+64 bit extensions is not a redesigned 64 bit Pentium 6, but, do you REALLY believe that Intel would design 64 bit extensions without having an OS in the bag?

Yes, Inte has done it with every processor release. OS always comes later.
