Your characterization of "changing their tune" is clearly wrong. Intel "changed their tune" once over 4 years ago when they introduced Xeon. Back then, you could have called this Intel's Plan B, with Itanium becoming relegated to the high end to compete with SPARC/Alpha/POWER once Barrett and company made this decision.
Intel has been very supportive Xeon ever since, and it has made them a lot of money. It's clear that it will continue to be a focus of the company, and will do whatever it takes to keep it competitive.
