Tesla’s “full self-driving” is “designed to keep up with traffic, steer in the lane and abide by traffic signals. It requires an attentive human driver prepared to take full control of the car at any moment.



The story contained no evidence that the accident was caused by the car. Maybe, maybe not.

Despite the man’s claim in the police report, CHP said in its Dec. 7 report that it has not confirmed that the man’s Tesla was in “full self-driving” mode at the time of the crash.


Hopefully the data was captured and will be useful in the NHTSA investigation.

crude: thanks for posting. Sorry for a rather late reply - I was on a 15-day cruise.

Being a somewhat LOUD advocate for all things MUSK (including his FSD and purchase of Twitter), I have several issues with the WESTERNJOURNAL story.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, the story fits the pattern of suspecting FSD, even if there is no evidence its was being used. Even though the story includes the following disclaimer: 'Despite the man’s claim in the police report, CHP said in its Dec. 7 report that it has not confirmed that the man’s Tesla was in “full self-driving” mode at the time of the crash.'. it ASSUMES that FSD was involved.

Second, while it makes mention of Tesla's insistence that "It requires an attentive human driver prepared to take full control of the car at any moment. It’s delighted some drivers but also alarmed others with its limitations. Drivers are warned by Tesla when they install ‘full self-driving’ that it ‘may do the wrong thing at the worst time.'” ", it NEVER blames the DRIVER!

Third, it completely absolves from blame the second car in the pileup. My driving experience in many states and many countries, has taught me that the car in front of you may do weird stuff; however, if you crash into it, the fault is YOURS. You, and you alone, are responsible for monitoring the state of the entire highway; AND keeping in mind that the car in front of you is a TESLA which may be in FSD. If the TESLA rear ends another automobile, and that causes it to stop SUDDENLY, there is not anything you can do. However, if the TESLA used its brakes to slow down, then you could have and should have done the same thing.

FINALLY, have I experienced the so-called phantom braking? Short answer: OFTEN. Each time it happens, my wife has a fit. However, I just remind her that if the software is confused about conflicting signals, it does what IT THINKS is the safest thing. It is up to me to override the autopilot. In the case of phantom braking, I would NEVER allow the car to lose 35 MPH of speed without accelerator override.
