Once these sample fabrics have been tested and approved,

the Company plans to begin weaving several thousand yards of finished fabric incorporating its recombinant spider silk.

The fabrics they got as “samples” are going to be cut fitted manipulated and likely abused until they find the right designs they want to use them in, I imagine using the dragon silk composite would be a foolhardy move considering the cost it takes to make it, which despite being “comparable” would likely still be a nonsense move to use up the premium product on something you can toss standard product to handle.

Better to design and work with the basic material before going balls to the walls with the composite blend...

Good catch. I missed that language on the first read.

On the plus side, the mill is back in operation and Prodigy is able to ship to another country. Tells us more about the status of work in the region. Things are moving forward.

Obviously we don’t know at this time if Prodigy has enough silk to weave those thousands of yards of Spydasilk yet. The fact that the samples were created with mundane silk is a little disturbing, as it implies that quantities are so scarce that Prodigy substituted mundane silk instead.

Without knowing particulars, it takes approximately 600 pounds of yarn to create a thousand yards. (This number varies considerably with the weight of the fabric, an unknown quantity. But the range is likely between 400 to 800 pounds.)

We also don’t know the ratio of silk to cotton. If this were 50%, that implies 300 pounds of silk per thousand yards. A metric ton is around 2200 pounds, so a ton might be good for 7,000 yards.

These are back of the envelope computations, but thousands of yards is not a particularly impressive number. Tens or hundreds of thousands of yards will most likely be needed to complete the $3 million on contract for 2021.
