5. Encryption everywhere
PCI and new privacy regulation will act as the hammer, but there will be more and more encryption solutions coming from the industry. New databases have row level encryption baked in as do disk and tape drives from vendors like Seagate, IBM and Sun. Windows Vista BitLocker will also drive mass encryption deployment as it gains momentum throughout the year. By 2008, encrypting data won't be as big a deal. Alternatively, encryption key and policy management will become a huge issue overnight.

Once upon a time I posted

Attestation Authentication, Attestation, Authentication.

Seagate doesn't do it. Bitlocker doesn't do it. Sure it gets confusing there are a lot of parts to the network.

Answer this question and I think you'll feel better. How do you get to share information on an encrypted drive? Inquiring IT managers will have to know. How does a captain pick up a major's laptop and find out what was on it? The General would like to know.

How do three guys in a department share information without sharing the information with nine other guys in the department? and what if one of them wants to take his laptop and put it on the company's server in Yemen?

Key management happens as soon as trusted drives are put into play. Long ago SKS drove us all crazy with month after month conversation about TPMs and nothing about Wave. He's still doing that, but I seem to hear a lot of flags flapping in the wind these days. The secrets are coming, The secrets are coming!!! MANAGEMENTS NEED TO MANAGE THE SECRETS AND THE KEYS.
