Actually 1918 had the perfect transportation system to spread the virus, for the technology of the time.

Start with crowded military training bases, troop trains and transport ships. Prolonged, continual, contact, whooping, laughing and carrying on like there will be no tomorrow because....

Wash, rinse, repeat, the return trip, after the super spreader activity that is.........….trench warfare.

Slower but no less deadly and with pandemic breadth.

Given how easy it is to travel now (compared to 1918), spreading a virus globally can happen in a matter of a couple of days (depending on the location of patient zero - urban vs. rural?)
