Bruce,
When we grieve we grieve for ourselves because we are bereft of someone dear to us, and because their loss reminds us of our own mortality. We do not grieve for the one who has gone because we know death is a natural part of all life, and merely a transition from this plane of existence to another, the shedding of an old skin and the joyful taking on of a new one.
Losing a parent is so hard. No matter how old we grow, our parents are irreplaceable, a source of strength we turn to when our own weakness frightens us, and that doesn't change even when they are aged and it is, in fact, our strength that is supporting them.
I feel your pain, Bruce. But think how lucky you were to have had your mother with you for so many years. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.
