I spoke to my PCP and he cautioned against allowing my friend to visit me

Listen to your Primary. There is no test that can absolutely tell you the absence of Covid.

Yes, I believe it's true, and in the news media at least, I haven't seen anecdotal proof that ABs protect you from the virus either. That said, however, you should also assess the risk of seeing your best friend--from the point of view of California's very low death rate per capita--versus the detriment to your QOL of not seeing your best friend.

Ask for a PCR test. That should help identify an active infection.

No promises though.

My best friend who is in Manhattan Beach, CA wants to come visit me where I'm self-quarantined in Palm Desert, CA. He is with Kaiser. I told him that before he came to visit me, he should get an antibody test. (and a test for COVID-19.) Kaiser refuses to provide any antibody test. (They told him that they're having difficulties getting contract(s) with the labs that perform the tests.)

Bladerunner,

The lasted info I saw was that some 75% of the COVID-19 infections are in 5 Southern CA counties (LA, Riverside, San Diego, Orange & San Bernadino) which I believe included both Manhattan Beach and Palm Springs. Can't you guys Zoom to chat?

Then yesterday I spoke to my PCP and he cautioned against allowing my friend to visit me. My doctor said that there is no definitive proof that the antibodies will prevent you from getting the virus. Is that true?

If he’s positive for antibodies and not currently ill, then he very likely isn’t infectious. But the tests aren’t perfect. (Some were pretty bad - and I don’t know that they have been removed from the market yet)

As for RNA swab, that is even less perfect. Quite possible to have been infected day 0, get tested day 3, get results day 5, then on day 6 visit with transmittable infection.

Bottom line - the best guarantee is full quarantine - which is why countries impose it for 2 weeks to new arrivals.

BTW - Manhattan Beach had a fair number of cases early on because it’s full of jet setters (I believe the HS even shut down for a while at some point before the lockdown)
