I tend to agree with your assessment of HP...but they are not the exception.

The internet, upon which we have all become dependent, enables nefarious actors
and allows them to remain hidden.
Globalization of communication, of trade relations etc. etc. has taken over our lives.

Think of the proliferation of "smart" phones and appliances...can we do without them at this point?

I keep hearing "the internet is forever" meaning:
ALL information, once trafficked on the net, is never completely deleted...
it's stored. somewhere, on some machine(s) somewhere and
contains every key stroke you ever posted over the internet.

I'd take my tin foil conspiracy hat off if I could.
But off-grid living does not appeal to me all that much.
I doubt it will be allowed to exist for much longer.

My HP printer still works but is aging.

I too went to hell and back to get the thing set up after purching it as the directions failed. I was on the phone with "Bangalore Bob" for nearly 5 freaking hours!

It was clearly a case of the blind leading the blind!

He didn't try to rip me off and did, finally, succeed but I do not want to subject myself to this nonsense again. So....

Any recommendations on what brand of printer I should buy when the time comes? Is Brother still good?

HP really is nasty. I bought one too and sorry I did.
Ink is their real money maker. I'm pretty sure I've read a few times that hp and other companies purposely force you to change the cartridge when there's still like 1/3 very usable ink amount left. Obstinately, the manufacturers say this is necessary to give us users the best quality? It's bullshit.
And yes, hp tracks you on the internet AND will insert advertising when you are using their 'hp experience' software. When you bring up most of the models hp controller app, it's calling home and sending your data in. They say this is to check for updates and stuff.

I don't want to think about this. There's an install folder in the user area of your computer (windows)that will show all apps that hp loaded and in services hp had 7 running apps at boot time. Absolutely not needed bloat garbage. They are not alone.

My experience with HP has been very different to yours. I've had several HP printers (but they are older ones I use for my XP machine -- yes, I still prefer my XP to the Win10!). I always refill the printer cartridges myself which saves me a bundle. I consider the HP my workhorse printer.

On my Win10 machine I have a wonderful little Canon portable printer. This is my second one. The first one lasted 11 years and just died (I think it needs a new printhead) so I bought my second one ($162 at Amazon). I also fill the ink cartridges on this machine, but it is much easier to do than with HP.
