The private for profit guys have made a series of poor choices over a long period of time and have hit the $$$/belief wall. The CNS/AD social $$$ system is/will be drying up. The social system guys have had far fewer funds til now and less/lower effort. Should the social system guys get a treatment that works then the $$$ guys will suddenly be reborn and will figure out a way to steal it (my theory). The $$$ guys have spent their wad on H/W like PET SCANNERS and BIOS used for such and theory dry holes. Now, even that is drying up. Looks like the social system guys (Aus/Spain/Canada/Japan..) have kept moving at least and will cross the line first if they stay w/it, bodies in motion kind of thing. IMO, money guys blew their wad on Amyloid and (for reasons unknown to me) have not figured out what to do w/about and work with the Precision Medicine crew. The entire ACTC/NIH sponsorship of BIIB is evidence of a very serious leadership issue (IMO). They are screwed b/c all they can continue to do is lie even bigger lies.
What should happen next is the social med guys will have to show proof but will be broke. The money guys should partner up w/ the PM/social people and gallop into the CNS disease sunset together. Social med will benefit from reduced costs eventually and they will have treatments that actually work. The biggest losers will be the dementia care warehouses and the big H/W guys. We need AVXL to partner w/good people and lead the whole parade.

Unfortunately the free market under the rule of law which means the Constitution the Magna Carta and the common law, has been crippled by regulation and legislation inspired by the false belief that centralized control under an enlightened bureaucracy can yield better results. Thus you have banking regulation and the security and exchange commission which have really made a mess of the financial system and the securities industry and you have the FDA which is made a mess of the process of balancing risk and reward in the exploration of new drug technology Nice in the world as it exists Australia Canada and Europe have better incentives to allow Innovacion in order to save the socialist medical system from the weight of an impending epidemic of age related diseases The good doctor being a terrific businessman as well as a brilliant scientist is smart enough to see the world as it is and take it vantage of the reality.

Ummm sort of.

The government has always spent a lot of money on basic R&D that had no direct applicability to profits.

There are large companies that do basic R&D even so, most of that is oriented towards their particular niche.

There are exceptions of course. Having a government program focused on a particular problem when well funded can, and has frequently, produced good results and unexpected benefits.

Think the Moon landing projects. They produced much of the miniaturization in electronics that led to where we are now.

Frequently it is government spending that goes to for profit companies that allows them to bring ideas to fruition. Think DARPA, NASA, etc.
