Lets hope we see the jump to $3bn in the same fashion , one seemingly
simple PR and through the roof …

They don’t see themselves as strangling the competition, they see it as funding the competition at the expense of others during the riskiest part of their journey, while ensuring that they can acquire the assets at the cheapest rate possible if the technology is validated. It’s just risk management. It’s not personal.

There are also plenty of scientists and others who will do the really mean and nasty work mostly because it is in their personal interest to do it. Those people don’t need to be directed. Maybe given some indirect encouragement. But they know how to sweep those baby legs.

So many things work naturally like they could be a “conspiracy” that are just alignments of powerful interests. No conspiracy is usually ever required. People with power do frequently what is in their personal interest to do. This can even cause governments to act badly and probably even wars.
