You have to understand the history of China especially the last century where it was labeled the "Sick Man of Asia" when the western powers carved it up and humiliated it with the opium wars and Manchu rule destroyed the country. I think the leadership has vowed never to let that happen again. China is a huge country with a very poor interior but rich coastal areas. They cannot afford any unrest to ruin their long term plans to make China great again. Not that I agree with the political system but how do you manage over a billion people. Look at the mess in the US where it is gridlocked most of the time with an increasingly diverse population and ideology spectrum Just hoping that the Chinese government will relax its control once the country has achieved its security needs and it populace have achieved a certain level of economic independence. History will tell.
