LOL, I'm glad to see I'm not the only small business guy that goes ballistic when the conversation turns to discount stores! Pass me that bottle of bourbon, because in today's free market it is NOT a level playing field for Mom & Pop businesses. You are correct that the monopoly of the big box store is destroying neighborhoods. In my city of 125, 000 the last butcher shop closed last year, alone with all the small stationary stores, Video stores, and only one small pharmacy, and one nursery left.
(The list goes on and on.)
Years ago when this started in my business, the growers got greedy and started to undercut florist and sell wholesale to the public, then to the discount stores.But the discount stores realized that they could buy all their flowers in OTHER countries at half the price and cut the growers out.
Of course now that the florists are disappearing, the local growers no longer have that market share and the farmlands are disappearing throughout my area into concrete jungles with BIGGER discount stores that all look the same!
God it's way too early in the morning for me to rant and rave! Cur where are you......
