RE:

Fireman - How long have you been on the Ketosis diet?

Hello drv. I have been doing Keto for about 3 years on and off but have been on 100% keto for about a full year now. It was easy for me at first because my body was already somewhat fat-adapted because of strenuous nature of my job and going hours sometime without eating. I had a bit of the "keto flu" that lasted about 2 days but was minimal because my body already had the necessary enzymes to use fat as fuel, but it takes about 3-5 weeks for your body to become super-efficient to use fat as fuel, rather than glucose. I also took vit C and electrolytes that ease the flu like symptoms. Keto is starting to be used for treat Alzheimer's,MS and cancer patients that are just getting done with Chemo of the anti inflammatory nature of the diet. It aso cures Type 3 diabetes and there are many medical research papers to support ths. It also restores/improves Mitochondrial function and density.

This article explains the benefits of the Ketosis Diet beyond the normal weight loss, improved energy levels and reduction of LDL and Triglycerides in the blood-stream.

Keto consists of eating grass-fed beef, pork, salmon, grass-fed butter, tons of Avocados, nuts, berries, cheese, tons and tons of veggies. 60-70% of calories should come from fat. Some Keto experts in past have claimed to keep protein levels low because it interfere with the process of going into Ketosis. Proteins main function is cell-repair (not energy) and more recently they are recommending its ok to eat about .5 -.75 grams of protein per-pound of body weight, particularly for folks that are working-out. I have modified my diet and eat between 75-150 grams of carbs a day. But most carbs I eat are super-high in dietary fiber so my net carbs are around 50-60 grams. Everyone is different and after a bit of experimentation you can find what works for you.

In regards to you living in a retirement community and restaurants. Eat what they have on the menu. Eliminate 100% of the sugar from you diet. Its ok to eat some carbs, but make sure they are low on the GI scale...rice and sweet potatoes are ok, just don't overdo it and keep net carbs under 75 grams. You can go lower if you like, but ease into the diet at first. 7 months of the year I dont have access to good beef and fish (kinda hard to find on the fire-line) and eat whatever's available for meet. Once every 2 weeks, I have a crab day and eat pizza, chocolate, ice cream...its good to reload the liver with glucose every few weeks and keeps your body metabolically flexible. Once your truly fat-adapted you can do this.

use Kerigold butter and coconut oil in my morning "Buttered Coffee".

Keto Coffee. I do something similar, its called the Keto Fat Bomb! I also have been experimenting with 16 hour fasting and consume most of my food between 12pm-8pm. My energy levels went up huge. I work-out in the mornings and can push through a grueling hour-long weight and cardio session with energy to spare. Its been unreal.
