Falconer......"Discounting" is a word with multiple meanings. Stock markets are "discounting mechanisms" which simply means that at certain junctures the prices of stocks are "marked up" due to future positive expectations. In this case, "discounted" means that once the first set of wells comes in successfully, investors will push the price of the stock up in anticipation of more successful wells to come. This only means that a stock market is a "forward-looking entity."
I believe that I have used the term correctly as it pertains to markets since markets will continuously be "discounted" in both directions- up and down. The term can be a bit confusing to those who do "discount shopping", though.
