i'm not sure players had "that" kind of pull back then, to dictate what they did or didn't do. while drafting this response, i took a look at the babe's career stats. learned something i did not know: in 1918 he pitched to a 13-7 record, and played 74 games in the field - smacking 11 taters. then in 1919 he pitched to a 9-5 record, and played 116 games in the field - scorching a then record 29 dingers. so, for two years - he did do both. then he went to the yankees, and you know the rest.....
