I grabbed some Diamonds in late '08 for another portfolio I run. DIA was ultimate coward's investment for that troubled Great Recession period.

My original Index fund in the 1980s was the Vanguard Total Stock Market Portfolio, a traditional mutual fund... which basically owns all US listed stocks. It's available now as an ETF (symbol VTI). I see that it's slightly beaten the S&P 500 for the past 15 years probably because of its overweighting of smaller cap stocks.

Yes, such ETFs are marvelous for new investors. Plenty of seasoned pros and hedge funds use them as well. And you don't have to worry about individual stock frauds when your money is divided among several thousand stocks.
