There is a difference yes, but last time (pre-resizing) before we were going to have a 1st interim, they were going to do an efficacy analysis, because they stated, if the 1st IA occurred, the DMC would come back with a recommendation that might include an early stop for efficacy (although they stated that is rarely the case in trials.) If the new protocol changed the 1st interim to a futility look only, which I kind of doubt, IMHO, it would spend less alpha.
