No brainer, yes she should be on a statin...and any Doc that hasn't had her on one already she should fired! She's been a diabetic for most of her life, this has had a major toll on her vascular system for years! It's all about the patients and zero about the $$$. Her LDL should be LOW! How low is the question, but definitely below 100. If she's taking OTC fish oil, it might kill her with the increase in LDL.

I too am a T1D[for 58 years], on Zocor for >20 yr. LDLc much< 100, HDL and TRG match your friend.

drrc, HDL 75 is beautiful, LDL 125 is not bad as far as LDL goes but in a type 1 Diabetic is worrisome. Needs to be on Crestor or Lipitor and Vascepa, despite Tri of 60. V will enlarge LDL particle size while decreasing number of LDL particles, which makes LDL less likely to produce CVD. D/C any "fish oil". 70-80% of Diabetics will die of CVD.

My immediate thought was "I'd give up my left arm to have numbers like that!", LOL. Seriously, with diabetes already an issue, and high HDL, low TGs, this woman shouldn't even be considering taking a statin IMO - I'd try garlic and other herbs, including "fish oil" over statins - worked for me.

Vascepa improves the Quality of LDL-C! Safer...

-reduces oxLDL-C
-reduces sdLDL-C
-reduces VLDL-C

drrc ... Statins ,
must be by now one of the most studied drugs in history.

I think the evidence clearly shows ,that those "at risk " and diabetics are at risk of CV events ...the benefits far out weigh the risks.

I suspect that since your friend's LDL is at 125 , her Endo may prescribe a very low dose generic Statin to begin with ...see how she tolerates that and then a follow up lipid panel in 3 mths .

After 3 mths , if she is handling the Statin fine and her LDL is above 70 , he may suggest she up the Statin dose to get her LDL close to or under 70.

Either way ...I strongly suggest she at least try a low dose Statin for 3 mths and see how she does and its effect on her lipid profile especially her LDL levels. .

OT ..is she aware of DexCom for Diabetes management.
They have inked a deal with Google Life sciences to develop new /smaller glucose sensors.
FDA has also just approved Dexcom's new G5 mobile continuous glucose monitoring system for use with Iphones
I was wondering if she ( or anyone else reading this ) knew of this system
