Yup, Windows Defender is free from MS, and to check stuff in startup without CCleaner, click on start button, type run in the search box, click on run at top, type msconfig, then click on the startup tab. That is everything that is running when you startup your computer. You don't need you printer running for instance, when you go to print it will print. You can go to the below sites to check what some of the stuff is, just make sure you don't uncheck your anti virus, and if you uncheck something you can always go back in and recheck it. When checking these sites for things in startup note that it matters if thing are capital or not.

When searching the sites use the info in the first column for search.
