It's formic acid which is toxic to the body.

methanol is very toxic

Methanol if ingested is toxic because is converted to formaldehyde which in turn is converted to formic acid which is toxic to the body. Combustion of methanol give off carbon dioxide and water. Methanol is also an additive in gasoline which increases its octane rating.
