Update: after numerous tries I decided to unplug it and try another outlet - nothing at all wrong with the outlet I was using since I use it all the time - but I was getting desperate - so I plug the computer cord into a different outlet (a power surge strip under my desk) and nothing happens but then I changed the cord to the new one and all of a sudden the computer comes on - right now it is on and I am not going to unplug it until that battery powers up jic the plug doesn't work again
