Not sure why all the mods to the existing box

One possible answer is pretty simple, because it takes time and provides "room" for further complications.
Now, we haven't been told why mods to the drivers (transformers?) was needed but we were told the unit (with the prior drivers) performed well with results appearing good on the screen (but the data was not recorded).
Things that do not add up just keep piling on.
