Sorry to hear about your problem with your data. I know how you feel. I had a virus once and a disk crash but the folks at Cyber Works always got my data back. I too have not been good about backing up to my external drive so I finally signed up with Carbonite ($59/YR) and now I don't worry about it just gets backed up in the background while I change files.
