Don't know the answer. What I've read, the batteries are to power the electric motors to keep the ship in a geosyncronus orbit. My educated guess would be...they charge during the day... for use whenever. One good thing...@65K feet there's always sun. By the way do you have a link to the article from Pop Science. Thanks.
