sg: That is exactly right. Opteron successfully kicked Itanium upstairs into the rarified (and low volume) high end market.

If you think that, then you must be assuming that Operton solely held the upper end server space and that's not so. Xeon owns that space. The best you can say is that Itanium failed to assume some of the upper end Xeon space.
