Smooth,
Do you think that Intel would of extended Xeon to 64 bits if Opteron had not started getting some traction? Intel themselves have admitted that extending Xeon to 64 bits had an impact on IPF, I belive they stated it confused the market. But I think if no Opteron then no EM64T and IPF can more easily move down.

smooth20 - Opteron didn't have to take over the upper end server market to bump Itanium up to the rarified zone. Once Opteron became a player in the upper end server market, Intel no longer had the option of discontinuing Xeon and forcing migration to Itanium.
